Meet Victoria Dickerson | Child Author & Honor Roll Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Dickerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, what makes you happy? Why?
Dance and writing make me happy. I love writing. Even before I started to publish The Adventures of Super Vickie, I would spend weekend after weekend writing short stories. It took me about 2 hours of non stop writing the rough draft of Super Vickie. I also love dance. This is my 6th year of it, and I do tap, jazz, ballet, and hip-hop. Hip-hop is my favorite. Not only do I like the constant movements my teacher adds in our routines, I like the music itself. I listen to music so often, I have learned the complete lyrics to some modern day songs.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am creative when it comes to projects and drawing. My 5th grade class is an AC class, which I am very proud of. (AC stands for Advanced Content.) We are known for thinking outside of the box and coming up with mind-blowing work. But the work is tough. And one thing about the book business is having to dig deep. Sometimes it’s hard for me to think about what I want the illustrations to look like. I usually take one second to think, maybe take a small setting from another book and add on. A lesson I have learned is that you need to make thoughtful answers, because the illustrator can get very confused. Look out world! There’s a new superhero in town.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like visiting the Marietta Square. It has many delicious places/foods to eat. My dad owns a chiropractic office called Bridge Chiropractic and it gets very busy there. When we have breaks, we usually go and get some dessert from Crumbl Cookie or Duck Donuts. Crumbl has very creative cookie flavors, and Duck Donuts has delicious cake donuts that you get from Amusement Parks, except ten times better. There is a Six Flags right by my house. I’ve been there, it’s fun. I favorite the Gotham City rides. The area I live has some very enjoyable places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would – 1 – like to dedicate my success to my mom. She feeds me, hugs me, helps me with the puzzle of life, and organizes my book business. I would also like to thank Mrs. Stephanie of Ballard Publishing, who published the book, and found our illustrator – Ayan Saha – who I would also like to thank. His illustrations are fun, creative, and are better than any cartoon I could ever draw myself. Lastly, I want to thank my favorite author, Sharon M. Draper. She wrote some of my favorite books. Some of these are Blended, and the Sassy book series. Her books are relatable and really paint that picture in my head.
