Meet Dalton O’Connor | Dog Trainer & Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalton O’Connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalton, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me truly happy is seeing progress. Whether that’s in a dog, a person, or even within myself.
A lot of the dogs I work with come to me carrying fear, anxiety, reactivity, or a lack of understanding. Many owners are overwhelmed and feel like they’ve run out of options. Being able to guide both the human and the dog through that process and watching them finally find trust, confidence, and peace together is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
Dogs have taught me some of life’s most valuable lessons. They’ve taught me patience, accountability, consistency, and the importance of being present. They don’t care about your status, your income, or what mistake you made that day. They care about your energy, your intentions, and whether your willing to show up for them. Which is why I believe positivity is also a choice that we all have that we can make, and they helped me see that.
What truly makes me happy is knowing that through Doc’s Dogs, I get to make a positive on both ends of the leash. Every dog has a story, and every owner has a journey. Being trusted to help rewrite those stories is something I never take for granted.
At the end of the day, happiness for me isn’t found in achievement or awards-although I’m grateful for them. Its found in the quiet moments: seeing a fearful dog take its first confident step forward, watching an owner reconnect with their dog, or simply sitting with my own pack after a long day knowing we helped someone.
That’s what gives my work purpose, and purpose is what brings me happiness.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Doc’s Dogs was built on a simple belief: every dog deserves to be understood.
What sets us apart is that we don’t just focus on training dogs—we focus on helping both the human and the dog. Many people are looking for a quick fix, but real transformation comes from understanding behavior, communication, structure, and trust. My goal is to help owners see the world through their dog’s eyes so they can build a stronger relationship together.
The philosophy behind Doc’s Dogs is centered around calmness, understanding, and accountability. I believe calm energy builds trust, and understanding builds peace. Whether I’m working with a puppy, a reactive dog, or a dog with a bite history, I approach every case with the mindset of helping that dog move forward rather than simply suppressing behaviors.
My journey started through years of hands-on experience working with dogs and learning from incredible mentors and opportunities along the way. One of the biggest influences on my career was my time at Cedarcrest Animal Hospital, where I gained invaluable experience working with dogs of all breeds, temperaments, and behavioral challenges. Those experiences helped shape the trainer I am today and eventually inspired me to create Doc’s Dogs.
Starting a business has not been easy. There have been long days, difficult decisions, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve learned that success is rarely about talent alone. It’s about consistency, perseverance, and showing up every day even when no one is watching. Every obstacle became an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow.
One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing the impact our work has on families. Watching a fearful dog gain confidence, helping a reactive dog safely experience the world, or seeing an owner reconnect with a dog they once felt hopeless about is why I do what I do. Those moments mean more to me than any award or recognition ever could.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about Doc’s Dogs, it’s that we’re not just training dogs—we’re helping create better relationships. Every dog has a story. Every owner has a journey. Our mission is to help both move forward together through trust, structure, understanding, and calm leadership.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To be honest, I’m probably not the best person to ask about nightlife or vacation spots because most of my life revolves around work, the gym, and my dogs.
When I do have free time, you’ll usually find me at Madhouse Gym. It’s become a second home to me. Mark and Kim have built something truly special there—not just a gym, but a community. It’s a place filled with hardworking people who push each other to become better every day, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.
Outside of that, my favorite moments are often the simplest ones. I enjoy loading up my dogs and taking them to different parks, trails, and new environments. Whether we’re exploring a new place, going for a walk, or just spending quality time together, those moments help keep me grounded. Dogs have a way of reminding us to slow down, be present, and appreciate what’s right in front of us.
At this stage in my life, I work a lot. Building a business requires sacrifice, and there aren’t many days off. But no matter how busy things get, I always make time for my dogs. They have been with me through every chapter of this journey, and making sure they’re happy, fulfilled, and well cared for will always be a priority.
If a friend came to visit, I probably wouldn’t show them the hottest spots in town. I’d take them to get a workout in, spend time outdoors with the dogs, and enjoy the simple things. Those are the moments that mean the most to me, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I have to give credit to God. There have been many moments in my life where doors opened that I never could have opened on my own. Through every challenge, setback, and opportunity, my faith has helped keep me moving forward and reminded me that there is a greater purpose behind the work I do.
I also owe tremendous amount of gratitude to Cedarcrest Animal Hospital. Without the experiences they gave me, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. That environment allowed me to learn, grow, and spend countless hours understanding dog behavior on a deeper level. The experiences I gained there helped shape not only my career but also my philosophy when it comes to dogs and their owners.
A special thanks to my mentor, Frank Ortiz. Frank taught me lessons that went far beyond dog training. He taught me the importance of energy, understanding, patience, and truly seeing the dog in front of you. Many of the principles that have become the foundation of Doc’s Dogs were built from lessons I learned under his guidance.
Most importantly, I want to thank every client who has trusted me with their dog. It is an incredible honor when someone allows you in their lives to help a family member they love. Every dog, every owner, and every challenge has taught me something valuable. In many ways, the dogs have been some of my greatest teachers.
Also I want to thank my bodybuilding Coach Jairus Propst. He taught me what it takes to accomplish any goal is being consistent, and aligning my energy with the right intentions to make true progress. He is an amazing mentor, and an even greater friend. Without him I wouldn’t have learned how to have true confidence in the abilities that I have, & for that I’m forever grateful.
No one builds something meaningful alone. Doc’s Dogs may carry my name, but it was built through the support, mentorship, trust, and encouragement of many people and many dogs along the way. For that, I will always be grateful.
