We had the good fortune of connecting with Vic Nkhoma, Cpa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vic, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My biggest motivator was the necessity & need for freedom. I wanted to be free to pick my own schedule and use most of my 24hrs to be with family and friends. Long-term business ownership provides means to achieve this. Not only does it provide the financial means, but it provides you with the flexibility to do so if you put in the necessary sweat equity.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After attaining my CPA (Certified Public Accountant) license, I decided to start my Accounting & Tax business in 2020. At that time, I had been in the industry for 10+ years and it was time to horn in on my passion: numbers, business strategy & a strong desire to solve problems.
My company (Cloud Leaf Advisors) provides Accounting, Tax & Business Consulting services to small businesses and individuals who are dedicated to financial & organic growth, with a strong presence in the Tech space.
I was born in Zimbabwe, south of Africa and was raised by a single, hard working and dedicated mother in a family of 3 total kids, with me being the only son. Needless to say, my childhood wasn’t the most glamorous but from there, I built a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic. My academics were always on point but God also gifted me with the ability to play soccer. I pursued soccer after high school and miraculously landed a full ride soccer scholarship at Georgia State University in 2009. From then on, the sky was the limit. I always loved numbers and business and therefore, decided to pursue the highest Accounting licensure in the country (the CPA). Fun fact: I pursued Medicine in Zimbabwe and dropped out on the first day. It didn’t feel like my calling 🙂
Being in a foreign land and away from family presented a lot of challenges but I knew I was destined for more. With God being at the center of everything, I overcame language barriers, financial difficulty and D1 student athlete demands to where I am now and frankly, I strongly feel that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
I’ve learned that your goals should always be tied to something beyond your personal satisfaction. Yes, money/revenue is important for the growth of the company, but if that is all you’re chasing in the entrepreneurship space, you’re headed for disaster. I value the relationships I create with my clients & team. I do this for passion and the freedom to spend more time with my family and this is what my company brand represents. We are focused on creating financial value for each of our clients with the understanding that they’ll be able to feed their families, employ other people and contribute to the economic growth of the country. We work with clients that are as passionate about their finances as much as we are passionate about our company.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is know for a multi-cultural, diverse community. There’s always something to explore.
In no particular order, I’d
1) Catch a soccer game at the Mercedes Benz Stadium. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the stadium is a wonderful spectacle.
2) Visit the Battery in Cobb county, close to the Braves Stadium. It has great, less congested bars and restaurants and is family friendly.
3) Try some local Carribean food at Jamaican Mi Krazy in Smyrna.
4) You also can’t go wrong with some good Afrobeats/Amapaino music at Bamba Tuesday at The Rock Steady, hosted by favorite and versatile DJ @dangervybz
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
