We had the good fortune of connecting with Velinda Humphreys and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Velinda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Working for others for so long and then realizing that I could do this and maybe even better. People would come into the salon and address me as the owner or the one ran it pushed me even harder. I did everything the owner should have been doing with her receiving a percentage of my earnings. One day I realized I could not do it anymore and finally took that step 4 years ago and still managing to stay afloat. If you think it you can achieve it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a mobile hairstylist that caters to the elderly and disabled. Everyone does not have the patience or energy to handle that clientele but I love it. Not only do I love it but I give it my all even though most of them are older and could care less what their hair looks like. I think everyone should leave out looking fabulous. The competitions were tough getting into the facilities because once stylist get the position, they do not leave but I now have 4 facilities and had 5 but let one go. during the pandemic. it wasn’t easy and is still not easy but worth it. I promised myself that I would not give up and that’s a promise I plan to keep. I look at how far I have come even though I’m not where I would like to be, I’m still surviving. The best lesson I have learned is to not compare your success to anyone else, everyone’s path is different. I put my heart into each client and treat them as if they were one of my loved ones. Styles With a Smile and that’s what you get.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some must try places to eat are Alex Farms for their famous smoked chicken salad. Home cooked meals at the After Hours Bistro. Erica Jones for her delicious pizzas. Beautiful Blading for your eyebrows and lashes. If you plan on stepping out for night life and need a face breast check out Nikki Chanel the Facegyrl.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are several people that I admire their strengths and drive but Kimberly Newsom would be one.
