We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyric Bacon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyric, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
That work/life balance is something I have to always re-calibrate and work with, especially when one part begins encroaching on the other. It’s funny because I recently stumbled across an Instagram post that said to divide your year into seasons of work followed by seasons of rest. I feel like that system is something I resonate with, as opposed to trying to strive for a perfect balance within a single day. It’s how I intuitively organized my 2023. When it comes to adopting a healthy work/life balance, what’s most important is nurturing the relationship with yourself. Being able to actually pivot between these two parts of your life, and in regards to the Instagram post, knowing when to shift from one season to another. Not constantly saying to yourself “I’ll relax when, I’ll start this project when, etc.” That’s the issue I’ve personally ran into in the past. I have a hard time shifting between these two parts of my life and one inevitably begins to take over completely. As a result, I developed an unhealthy habit of just always being busy and having something on my plate. Since I already knew I had trouble pivoting, it made sense to just always keep myself working. My thought process was “better for me to constantly be working than constantly doing nothing.” You can see just how dysfunctional that way of thinking is. Thankfully, I’ve deconstructed that mindset and begun to really work with myself. It was important to establish trust and faith with myself and also give myself grace, regardless of what season I’m currently in. While also holding myself accountable with what I needed to do. Balance is crucial within everything we do and it’s important to not operate on extreme ends of the spectrum when it comes to how we live and how we respond to different aspects our lives.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sure thing! I’m a filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. My passion is bringing unique and complex stories to life, with themes spanning a large range of concepts. These have included biblical and theological imagery, supernatural universes, as well as raw and intimate narratives that serve as a microscope into the human condition. My work showcases dynamic visuals that demonstrate my creative literacy, which allows me to weave together intricate pieces into a visually impactful message.
2023 brought so many incredible moments for me, especially regarding my career. The achievement I’m most proud of is my short film, The Nation of Icarus. It’s a short film that delves into the rich history of NASA, its influences on America’s progression as a country, as well as philosophical questions about human nature. The entire process of bringing this story to life this year has been truly incredible. From flying to Houston to tour various NASA facilities, researching 65 years of history, and also having to constantly reinvent myself and how I visually craft narratives. It’s all been an amazing experience and reignited that passion for filmmaking I’ve had since I was a little kid. To finally have it out in the world after so much preparation and hard work is a great feeling. I’m deeply satisfied with the end result and I’m honored to call The Nation of Icarus my directorial debut and first project as a filmmaker!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For people that love immersive experiences, definitely go to Illuminarium Atlanta. I actually filmed sections of The Nation of Icarus there, when they had their space-themed shows going on. It’s basically this giant room with a series of projectors spread out all around. The room becomes engulfed with these eye-popping visuals, it’s just something you have to see in person! There’s so many different themes that they offer so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. There’s African safari shows, various music themed nights, as well as days when they screen entire football games for people to watch. You can also order food, drinks, and visit the gift shop they have. Plus it’s only 10 minutes from Ponce City Market so once you leave, there’s so many places you can go afterwards. Meet me at Skyline Park!
There’s also this new place that’s popped up in Atlanta recently called Your 3rd Spot. I haven’t had the chance to go yet but from the videos on TikTok and the reviews I’ve heard from people who’ve been there, it’s definitely a place to check out! There’s games and different activities they offer but the thing that everyone raves about is the menu. I’ve heard nothing but great things so you’ll probably see me there to whenever you go.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to say thank you to my family and most importantly, my mom. Throughout everything I’ve done and everything I’ve accomplished, they’ve always supported me and been that support system I’ve needed. My mother especially has always been the one to stand in my corner the most. She’s fought for me, protected me, believed in me, even at times when I didn’t believe in myself. Her actions and motivations have always been to propel me forward in whatever dream I have. Her words of wisdom and encouragement have guided me forward all my life and have helped shaped how I live my life. Without her, so much of the success I’ve been able to experience would simply not have happened for me. I’m truly grateful for the woman she is and how much she sees in me. It allows me to live each day with my head held high, with a strong inner sense of inspiration and strength to go after the things I want to achieve. I do all of this for her and for all of my family.
