We had the good fortune of connecting with Trisha Monae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trisha, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My childhood is my inspiration. When I was younger, I watched my mother struggle to pay bills and pay for everyday expenses. I remember one situation so vividly. My mother had to return her bed that she was making monthly payments on, just so she could pay rent. I remember her telling me she had to sleep on the couch for a few weeks. Growing up I always thought about how I could make sure that my family would not face those same challenges all over again. By creating a brand that offers a variety of products, I know that one day I will be able to take care of my family financially. I don’t ever want my family and I to go back to that place. Every time I think of my past, it inspires me to go harder.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Monae Brand offers many different products such as cosmetics, handbags, and accessories. What makes my brand stand out is the quality of my brand. From marketing to content, my brand is top tier. One of my instagram followers recently commented: “I love your brand so much it gives me multi million dollar brand! The design and all!” One of my goals as an entrepreneur is to have my brand eventually become a multi million dollar brand. The fact that one of my supporters pointed that out speaks volumes!
Getting where I am today business-wise was not easy whatsoever. I wanted to give up so many times. Most recently back in December of 2020. I decided to create a custom Christmas box that would have a variety of products in it such as an eyeshadow palette, lashes, and liquid eyeliner. I spent a good amount of money on the custom boxes. I didn’t sell one box during Christmas time. I was very upset and I almost gave up. After that happened, I told myself that giving up was not an option. I prayed and kept my head up. I kept reading Jeremiah 29:11 which states, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” In February of 2021, I decided to rebrand the boxes for Valentine’s Day. I sold out of the boxes within 2 weeks. Ultimately I learned that sometimes things take time and patience is key.
I am very excited about my new product line coming in May of 2021. The Monae Brand will now have a signature collection. The collection will include many items. The only item that has been released so far is the handbag.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from a very small town in Indiana and there isn’t much to do here. I would first recommend a few restaurants such as Hacienda, Cock-A-Doodle Cafe, Mandarin Kitchen, and Das Dutchman Essenhaus. Hacienda is a great place to hang out and have a few drinks at during the day or at night. Das Dutchman Essenhaus is great place to get homemade food. They also have a gift shop for souvenirs and other keepsakes for friends and family.
For places to hangout, I would recommend University Park Mall, The Escape Room, and Strikes and Spares which is similar to Dave and Busters.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is dedicated to three people. First my mother, Michelle Coleman. She has always pushed me to do bigger and better things. Second is my good friend Jalen Benton. He was the one that came up with the name “The Monae Brand.” At the time my business was named “Monae Lashes” and I was limiting myself to only selling false eyelashes. The Monae Brand allows me to sell any product that I want. Jalen also helps with all of my marketing content such as graphics and flyers. Lastly my sister Paris Ruff. My sister has always supported me since day one. She was the very first person to place an order in my store. She has spent over $500 in my store and will always be one of my biggest supporters. Without these three people in my life, I don’t know where I would be. Especially when things went wrong. They are always here for me when I need them, and they give me the constant reassurance that I need. I appreciate them more than they could ever know.
