We had the good fortune of connecting with Tahara Saron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tahara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started BlackGold Publishing back in 2017, I admittedly could not yet fathom the immense significance behind what I was creating. In my mind, I was merely incepting a safe space for black and ethnic creatives seeking direct representation — a move that was largely galvanized by the racial discrimination I faced from a white publishing house, as a young author. My mindset shifted however once I realized that my experience was not unique and that there existed thousands of black authors who too, shared my story. That’s when I knew that BlackGold Publishing was vital. Expanding the visibility of black authors everywhere is my goal and purpose and I won’t stop until the need for inclusivity and diversity within the publishing industry is a thing of the past. We’re changing the narrative.

What should our readers know about your business?
I was a lover of black literature first, before I was anything else. For over 15 years, I have inked my name as author, co-author, poet, laureate and playwright of a vast catalogue of compelling and culturally pivoting literary works. Through this love of black art, I created BlackGold Publishing – one of the largest black owned and operated publishing houses in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia. It wasn’t easy and at times I felt defeated but God. I have since, contributed my knowledge to supporting inclusivity and radical justice within the publishing industry through the distribution of works by our authors and creatives.

As of 2021, myself and staff at BlackGold Publishing, (in Ascoiation with the BlackGold Publishing Book League of Hampton Roads) currently house over 110 titles in acquisitions, have been featured by The Daily Press, CNN, We Buy Black, Kindle and represent a diverse group of 75 skilled and talented authors, illustrators and creatives, worldwide.

And we aren’t done yet.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in the Hampton Roads Area of Virginia my whole life and I have to say that the 757 is notorious for those “in the cut” spots that will surprise you every time. For anyone visiting, there’s definitely one that stands out above the rest: Orion’s Roof. Orion’s is a rooftop restaurant overlooking the city and ocean, nestled 20 feet above the coast in Virginia Beach. It’s posh, intimate and the wine selection is excellent — get that window seating for a good time with good views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many faces I wish I could kiss right now… but I’ll start with the most high. Thank you God for the ability, first and foremost, to have been divinely chosen for this and blessed to see it through – I would not be where I am today without your immense and gracious love. Ase. To my parents, my children, my best friends and close loved ones — a soft yet immoderate thank you for honoring me throughout the years and for summoning me farther than I ever thought I could go. I am so incredibly thankful to share life with you all. And lastly, but never last in my heart, to the BlackGold Publishing team… this interview is as much yours as it is mine. Every bit of me is because of you. Thank you. I am so proud of US.
