We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Weaver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Admittedly, I didn’t have a plan in mind to start a business! When Covid hit, and we were forced into lockdown mode, my full of activity world came to a screeching halt.
At first, this extroverted gal was craving for face-to-face interactions. I longed to be together and not have to walk by my neighbors at a distance! But, I turned my thoughts about “self” to thoughts about “others” and how they must feel being isolated and I wanted to make a difference! There was such a desire to deliver encouragement, just to say “you matter” or “I’m thinking of you”.
I started putting together little gift boxes with products I had left over from a prior business that I sold. The joy that filled my heart with every box was lifting me too! My thought process was not to start another business! I continued to put my hands to making little gift boxes and also gift bags that I could give to the wonderful folks who were serving me (grocery clerks, etc).
Over the months, my mind seemed flooded with potential products to encourage others. I let my mind begin to think that “if” I did have a business (you may have guessed this is where the story was going!) what would the name be and why. It didn’t take long to know that DOING GOOD CO. was perfect, which comes from Acts 10:38 Jesus went about “doing good”. Yes! the business was born in my mind, and now I naturally gravitated to product testing (I love quality and detail), learning to make candles, designing my own labels, card designs, etc.
I thought I would put a few gift boxes and gifts on Etsy but also felt I should have a simple website to give legitimacy to my brand. I worked with a gal who helped me with my business logo, branding colors and then a website.
I’m a born encourager and never satisfied until everyone around me is happy too! DOING GOOD CO. is a natural expression of who I am (my brand) and I’m so grateful to be able to touch the lives of those around me near and far!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Here’s the back story… It all began in 1991, in the state of Massachusetts, my heart was opened to receive God’s truth. The words of John 14:6 flooded my life with love and a peace I’d never known before. Next thing I knew, I packed up and was on my way to Bible school in Florida. I landed in Southern California for my last year of school and from there I launched out to the mission fields of Thailand & India. I went from the ease of my western world amenities to washing my hair in a stream (at the same time that the chicken was being cleaned for dinner), sleeping on a mat, and taking more bucket baths than I can count. It was an amazing time of seeing God move and being a part of something incredible.
After returning from overseas, I had the opportunity to take part in a few church plants in Montana and California. I ended up in Georgia, where I bought my first house, landed my dream job, and took up the sport of cycling. Then I met the love of my life and got married to my husband. We not only met biking, but married on a bike, and celebrated our honeymoon by embarking on a long-range trip…600 miles of cycling to be exact. I am also a stepmom to four fantastic young men and have a delicious chocolate lab, who loves to greet us with a smile.
The here and now… Throughout the years, I have had one unwavering purpose – to find ways of encouraging others. This is truly my passion and the driving force of my life. With DOING GOOD CO., I make it my business to build others up! I can’t tell you how excited I am to become a part of your journey. You are the purpose behind the development of my business!
Fun facts and tidbits… I cycle 70 miles a week, I love 70’s music but am a terrible dancer, I make up for my weak dance moves with my natural wit, I have been hang gliding, sky diving, and zip lining and I have climbed Mt. Sinai on camelback (and made it down on foot)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hike through the Chattahoochee Nature Park – great trails and so enjoyable to walk along the river! At least a few trips to Mellow Mushroom on Chamblee Dunwoody for their thin crusted, pesto based pizza with jerk chicken! And definitely seeing “Billy” the manager there! Bit of shopping at Hobby Lobby on Ashford Dunwoody or a half day at Avalon where there is some great stores and restaurants to choose from. Church too – Dunwoody Community Church
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been a great support and given me the time to develop the business. My friend Susan, who always lets me bounce my ideas her way and gives me honest critique (I count on that!). She has also been incredibly helpful with design colors, text/text re-writes, prayer and encouragement (not in that order!) Patricia, who I met on LinkedIn and lives in India. She was responsible for taking my website wording and making them sound delightful! Thank you Patricia for your gift of words and how you helped transform my website text.
