Meet Steven Colbert | Videographer, Editor, Educator, & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Colbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue a creative career because I have experienced careers that are not artistic or creative and I did not enjoy that feeling. While working in non creative fields I felt as if I were a walking zombie, or going through the daily motions. Once I started working in a creative field everything changed. I understand that I am working however it does not feel that way, my father always told me to “do something you love, because if you do, you’ll do it for free and never get tired of it.” So what I love doing is being creative and using art to bring ideas to life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets my art apart from others is that it is always genuine and comes from real life experiences that each of us face. I am most proud that I get to inspire students each and everyday, there is no greater feeling knowing that I am changing the course of several lives for the better. I got to where I am today by being consistent and not taking no for an answer and this goes back to my support system, but realizing I can not because of who is in my corner. The path that I chose was and is definitely not easy, there were many nights where I thought about giving up. But I overcame these thoughts by simply utilizing my resources and again not taking no for an answer. Some of the greatest lessons that I have learned along the way are “Focus on your race and no one else’s, everyone has their own race that they must complete .” Another lesson I learned is that “If you don’t put hard work in, you cannot expect beautiful results.” I want the world to know that any goal is obtainable as long as you work for it and utilize your resources.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s a must that I take them to IPIC Theatres, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and my favorite Sweet Water Creek. As far as food I think it’s a staple to have wings and fries, but anyone that knows me well knows that I love burritos and I would have to take them to “El grill” in Norcross, Shout out to them for having the best burritos! You can do no wrong by hanging out at “The Painted Pin.” Which is an elegant bowling alley with other games and drinks. I think some of the most fun places are “The Ivy Buckhead,” “Impulse Karaoke Lounge,” and “Stone Mountain.”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many individuals that come to mind when thinking about who deserves more recognition! I have to start out first with my family, I am extremely blessed to have the family that I do, they are super supportive and always there, So shout out Mom, Dad, Vontreia, and Tra’. There’s no way I can lose in life with them in my corner and that multiplies itself when I Shout out my dear friends Caleb Lorentz and Cherrylita Castedio because they have basically become family as well.
