We had the good fortune of connecting with Star Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Star, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process about Good Skin Tools came from the lack of self confidence, and self love I’ve seen in my Esthetic clients. With majority of women clients and especially women of color I’ve heard my clients speak down about themselves, and admire the “look” of someone else. During the beginning of the pandemic I would receive skin care questions via DM on IG and I wanted to place the confidence of Good Skin in the hands of women.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My initial decision to attend Esthetic school was a technicality. I was Lash Tech with a clientele and attended to be “legitimate”. I fell in love – in love with skin care. The most important lesson I’ve learned is all skin is Good, and it’s also been my biggest challenge. Unfortunately, AA women tend to treat skin care as a luxury. Yes, skin treatments feel like self care but it’s more than luxuriating. When you look good, you feel good! Clear skin boosts self esteem!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our weekend would start at Piedmont Park to walk and catch up! We’d visit Ponce City Market for lunch and great people watching! I would love to take her to one of my faves, City Winery for a great live performance and a glass or two of wine!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to SHOUTOUT my beautiful daughters Ramsey & Bryson. They have taught me unconditional love and support. There were times in our lives that I looked to them for joy, and strength.
