We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacie West and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The First thing I thought was “What is something that I can add to me being a hairstylist?” And Selling Extensions Was The First Thing That Popped In My Head! So I Sat At My Dining Room Table And Thought Of A Name. “Milan” Came About By Me Thinking “Foreign” And Foreign Hair Is A Nice Grade Of Hair. Then “Luxe” Followed As Luxurious, Very Nice And Great Quality! And Then I Added Extensions Creating “Milan Luxe Extensions”! As I Started To Sell Extensions And Wigs I Wanted To Add More So I Took “Extensions” Off And added “Collection” Because It Was More Than Just One On my beauty line!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m proud to say that I haven’t and will never give up on myself and my business. Back in March 2020, right before we went on lockdown for the pandemic, I got fired from job and didn’t know what to do but get another job. I wasn’t confident in doing anything else because I stopped doing hair and wasn’t worried about my business but then I thought back to when I told myself “if I was to quit or get fired from this job I would never get another job” so I went full force with my business! Just so happen the government gave us a stimulus check and I put it all towards my new suite where I could get back to doing hair and getting back to running my business! I’m proud to say august 2021 I’m doing better than I have ever been! I’ve learned the meaning of saving and not giving up with this entrepreneur situation. The world should know that Stacie west is a jack of all trades. I’m a hairstylist, business owner, cheer coach, and event planner! I love doing what I do and can’t wait until the world get a taste of the Stacie magic! I’m also a very supportive person when it comes to black owned and even other cultures businesses! I feel when you do a good deed you receive it back and I wish all good deeds on my business!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I loveeeee getting drinks from the wells bar downtown Detroit! I do like to have some fun and going to reggae and Nigerian clubs are my favorite! On a hot summer day in Detroit, getting on a boat and hitting the Detroit river is so relaxing! Also the downtown river walk and calming and fun especially when we have Different fest down there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My auntie Kim definitely inspires me to be independent and work hard for what I want! We call her our “Rich Auntie” lol! She encourages ALL of her nieces and nephews to do better and want more for ourselves!
