Meet Shy Musiq: Singer /Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shy Musiq and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I constantly remind myself of my definition of success. It is easy to get lost in everyone else’s or the worlds definition of success that we miss out on our true blessings. For me, making a living out of my art and inspiring people to chase after their dreams is what keeps me motivated. When I get messages back from people saying they are inspired by my bravery of putting myself out there, it reminds me that the world always need examples to follow from.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my younger life I was drawn to musicians on the television. I was living in Kenya , my home country, and somehow envisioned myself being an influential artist just like the ones on TV! I would always be singing and when I got to high school I stayed involved in music by joining the school choir and participating in different musical activities. Later on in life , I relocated to Toronto where I eventually begun writing music to beats and years after started recording the music professionally! I currently have six songs live on streaming platforms. Being an immigrant, the culture differences have definitely influenced my creativity..I am in the process of figuring out where I fit in as an African artist residing in Canada . Each day is a discovery process. I have quickly learned how to get back on task after a “failure” because in reality everything is a lesson. My brand represents overcoming and perseverance. I hope to continue to inspire as I grow in my own right.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well pre -pandemic times, many food location spots would be open and we could explore different cuisines from different cultures. Toronto is a very multicultural city and there would be plenty of food to try out! At the moment my favourite spot is in the Toronto Islands, a short ferry ride away from the city. It has a beautiful view of the Toronto landscape and a “beach” type of place by the Lake Ontario! Pack a nice picnic bag and you a guaranteed a relaxing time with good company!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out @antoinettejohnson! She has been helping me with styling in my music videos and an all round friend I can depend on! She hooked this interview up! Also shout to to my recording team @lacasastudios for working with me on various projects! We have so much in store. Lastly, shout out to God for the blessing of family and the ability to create infinitely
