We had the good fortune of connecting with Shondra Glover and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shondra, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as an opportunity to improve any idea or situation. As a risk taker, I know the greater risks delivers the greatest reward. When I began my entrepreneur journey, my husband gave me some of the best advice. He said to me,” you should try it and if it doesn’t work, you can always try something else”. So with every risk and decision in my life/career, I tell myself this at the beginning. This advice serves as a shield that protects me from some of the difficulties that come with risk taking. It makes me feel as if I can do anything, even if the risk does not pan out exactly like I hope. There are risks you will win and some you will lose, but know that you can always try something else.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Anjelah Candle Company is a home fragrance company that creates handcrafted luxury candles using the finest fragrances and ingredients. Our candles are handcrafted and curated to transform your space into a feeling.
Anjelah Candle Company comes from a journey of love, patience, and healing. A journey between my mother and I after her cancer diagnosis. Candle making became therapeutic for me during this difficult time. It was something I didn’t see coming as a business opportunity but one that I have embraced and fell in love with. As an entrepreneur I had been in the wedding industry for quite some time, first as a linen rental store owner, a bridal show producer, then becoming the owner of a wedding magazine that was on newsstand for 3 years. Being in the wedding industry is where my comfort and knowledge was so candle making was quite a surprise.
This journey was not easy, but I saw it as a gift from my mom. It took about a year and a half of testing and choosing the ingredients and products that felt right. I am a perfectionist, so it may have taken me a little longer than most.
My challenge has been finding my voice in the retail world. I had to communicate to a different audience and convince them to try my products, where before I was giving inspiration, tips and advice on all things weddings.
I would like the world to know that our candles have a way of bringing people together through notes that evoke memories of happiness. Each time I am making candles I am always thinking of my mom and how much she liked to dance along with other great memories. I feel like all the happiness and love just spills into each of those candles in hopes that people feel the great energy from the time they place an order with us to the burning of their candles.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend came to visit me in Atlanta, the first place I will take her is to Slutty Vegan. My friend lives in Louisiana and has heard so much about the restaurant and she has been dying to try it so I will take her there first. I am a homebody so we will definitely chill with cocktails, great conversations and of course candles. For dinner we would probably do Two Urban Licks so she could try their salmon chips, which are pretty amazing. Afterwards would be have cocktails at the Garden Room Atlanta. Atlanta has the best brunch so we would definitely hit up a great place. It is just too many great places to name.
Once of the places we will definitely check out is Village Market ATL for some shopping. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my husband Art Glover for inspiring my entrepreneur journey. Without his support and encouragement I would not have achieve so many wonderful things in my 20 year journey. He never looked at any of my failure negatively but as learning curve that is preparing me for where I am suppose to be. He is always encouraging me to keep going.
