We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherlene Merritt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherlene, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a creative person, and when I had my daughter in 1999 I was moved to try my hand at sewing. I worked and worked at teaching myself the craft until in about 2004/2005, I opened my own boutique named after my daughter, She’. My boutique’s moniker, Forshe’ is all about making quality handmade garments with my special touch.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand, Forshe’ Inc. is at the stage of scaling. I am trying to make the leap from well-known local designer to a National or worldwide brand. I am known for making that special dress with hand sewn sparkle and design accents. I am the go- to for dresses that stop the crowd. In terms of growth, getting to this point was anything but easy. I have taken the circuitous route of having my own boutique, moving to being a high school teacher, only to land back in my creative zone, once I was widowed earlier this year. I decided upon my husband’s death to only engage in my heart’s desires from now on ,and designing is my passion. My advice for others is to go full force into what fullfills you early on in life. I want the world to know that it is never too late to realize a dream that you wake up and work towards each day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Can’t really answer that , because I don’t hang out. I would point them to Yelp and tag along to see the city sites I have neglected
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My journey has largely been about being an example to my four children, three of which are fellow creatives. Christopher, Quamius, Sherylene, and David need to know that seeing me live my dream is as much about inspiring them to live theirs is it is about me. So, I will say that having children sets you on fire to be the best version of yourself, like nothing else.
