We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakia Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shakia, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Number 1: REST is important! Your mind is constantly in “go mode” that you feel the need to always keep busy around the clock but I realized that your body and mind needs to rest in order to function better. Number 2: Write down your plan/goals. When you write something down it’s like a daily reminder of what you are working towards. You are practically manifesting the things you want by continously reading out loud what you’re going to do. Number 3: Think of ways to improve but never be afraid of failure in the process. Basically have a “winners mindset” but don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t go well or happen on your time. Always keep pushing forward. Allow room for constructive criticism. Number 4: Recognize that money isn’t everything. Let your passion drive you, the money will come.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Not only am I a Graphic Designer for Everything Milan but I am now the Owner and Founder of Simply Soulful health and beauty skincare line. Simply Soulful is made up of mostly organic/ natural products that are beneficial for your skin. It’s your one stop shop for all of your skincare needs. I have sensitive skin so I wanted to create a line thats suitable for all skin types. It started out with just a Detox Tea until one day I got the bright idea to expand to a whole line of beauty products for both women and men. The process wasn’t hard. You just have to do the research and find trusted/reliable manufacturers for supplies. Being as though I am a graphic designer I was able to design my own brand including the logo design to the labels and packaging. Along the way I’ve learned that a great product will sell itself. People will pay for great quaiity and if it also looks good then it shows you put in the extra effort for a eye-catching product as well. I’ve always had a business mindset and I’ve never been afraid to fail. My advice would be to not wait to start something because each day turns into another day. Just go for it! I started my graphic design business when I was 23 and at the age of 30 I no longer have to work for anyone else. I am my own BOSS which is most rewarding. The journey wasn’t easy but well worth it. Believe in yourself and believe that your business will prosper and it will.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Although I’ve been in Atlanta for 3 years now I haven’t been out much. One of my favorite things to do when I have friends in town is to go hiking at Stone Mountain. The view from the top is amazing and a great exercise along the way. A great place to eat is Oceanaire if you are a seafood lover like myself. But on a regular day I’m simple and Broadway Diner in Fayetteville is a great go-to spot. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Sugar Factory in Atlanta has great drinks but if you need something stronger most Mexican restaurants will do the job. Suite Food Lounge is a nice place to go to eat, drink, but best of all Party! Nice ambience and great music for a weekend night escape. My favorite place to shop would have to be North Georgia Premium Outlets. It’s a must if you’ve never been.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, my mother Tara Brown has always been a huge support system for me and all of my business ideas. She was the person who convinced me to move to Atlanta to better my business. She was right! I also would like to give a shoutout to an amazing artist Comacell Brown Jr. a.k.a CellSpitFire for his mentorship and always being there when I needed help with a new design. His work is incredible and inspiring. Along the way I’ve read many books, some of which were very helpful in creating the life I desired. The Law of Attraction, What on Earth Am I Here For, and The Secret.
