We had the good fortune of connecting with Shad Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shad, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started “Shot By Shad” when I was a senior in college. Originally RJ Stewdio, I wanted to be a source for affordable and quality photos while also creating an experience at the photoshoot. I felt like everyone deserved really nice pictures that represented them well. I wasn’t really “money driven”, I just wanted everyone to have photos done by me. I wanted to take over the campus during that time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an Atlanta native, born February 24, 1989. I have love photography since a child. Since I can remember, I always had a disposable camera. I began serious photography while in high school participating in yearbook and newspaper. In college, during my senior year,
I launched “Shot By Shad”, in the year 2011. Since then, I’ve photographed over 400 graduates from various institutions. I’ve captured 31 weddings, 47 engagements, and over 500 events and parties. I feel blessed when I say those numbers, because I still get so excited at photoshoots and events. It’s always different. It never feels like work. That’s what I love the most about photography. I’m usually capturing something joyous, so It makes me happy.
My journey hasn’t been, still isn’t, and I don’t expect it to be easy. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and in return, learned a lot due to making those mistakes. “There’s no growth in your comfort zone”, that’s a quote I say to myself often. I am working towards a mindset of pushing myself forward while ignoring the voice of doubt. I’m somewhat looking forward to the trials and tribulations that lie ahead, I just need to always remember how strong I am and keep my eye on the goal.
As a photographer, one lesson that I’d say is an on-going lesson, to say the least, is perfecting the business itself. You’re creating art when you photograph, so it’s fun and engaging. However at many times it’s hard to focus on the business aspect of the career. I’ve had to learn a lot about conducting business and honestly, I still learn daily and working hard to create a smooth running machine.
Shot By Shad is more than just a photoshoot or an event. It’s a en Experience. I can’t speak for everyone, but you will have get a smooth and positive interaction with me. I make it a point to make every client comfortable and help them understand that they are the star of their shoot, and I’m going to make it all about them.
