Meet Scepta | Recording Reggae Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scepta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scepta, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
For me it’s a love, a gift and it’s a blessing so giving up is not an option! Music can soothe the mind, body and soul. Even right down to animals. So as an artist it is a joy to share my creative expression lyrically through music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create lyrics from anything. It can be from observing or a direct experience but most of all there’s always a message of guidance.
I’m on a mission here, not a competition, which is to spread good and positive vibrations by following the process which was set a time ago and to never give up. So to create from a thought, form it into lyrics, and choose a musical composition then publish the works excites me.
To be where I am at this time is a continual journey that isn’t easy, definitely a challenge, but my love and joy is singing good solid radio friendly music with a message that anyone can enjoy. From that I’ve developed a supportive fan base that through the years told me to never stop writing, never stop recording and never stop believing in self. I’ve been performing in an out of the community at various events and on interviews so these are the opportunities I use to reach out. It makes the difficulties worth it.
When you live earnestly, it’s never easy. There’s lots of challenges to go through. I trod through the spiritual path. I fear no evil. I stay focused, positive and progressive.
Along the way be careful in who you trust. Have a true conviction to self and the love of the Almighty. If not you are doomed. I’ve lived by this and my life’s works follows this concept.
My first album, titled, Appealing Thoughts, talks about the negative and positive of my life and of the world. I am just the appealing Scepta.
The dictionary meaning of a sceptre is a staff held by a sovereign in a ceremonial occasion.. In the bible it says “the sceptre shall not depart from Judah nor the law giver from between his feet”. So the whole concept of my name Scepta is to appeal to the world by singing to educate, guide and show the light of atonement.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends who visit, we have a lot in common with each other. We would eat at mostly vegetarian restaurants, go to a nightclub, preferably a club with classic and contemporary reggae and play dominoes for sure. There, we fight for bragging rights on who dropped the most six love, while reminiscing on the good and bad times.
During the day I coach soccer boys an girls ages 7-10. It’s a joy to train them for their development. So if I had a game, I would invite my friends to come check them out.
Then, if I had a rehearsal, I would let them tag along and enjoy the vibes and have a live band experience. It wouldn’t be about the music alone but also the personalities because musicians are some of the most exciting people on earth because when they get together, they have non-stop jokes.
Being in New York helps because it would be a week of food, fun and freedom. You can always find any of the above plus more 24 hours a day everyday

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Foremost the Infinite Creator.
Mom and Dad for instilling the principles of life and the guidelines to carry on. There was Ms. Enton who was blind and said to me one day, “You know why I always sit next or near to you? I love to hear you sing.” That statement was a definite part of my inspiration. My older brother Chris had a little sound system at home which helped me to hone in on my craft as a 12 year old. Under the great reggae culture banner artists like Brigadier Jerry, Sugar Minnot, Big Youth, Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths, are some of the artists who influenced, inspired and ignited a drive in me to be in music. Respect to all the disc jocks who have continued to play Scepta. Bagga Bagga Bagga Love!
