We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Waston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote, although I have many, is an all-time quote that had shifted my perspective since I was a growing young adult navigating school, relationships, business, etc. And that quote is from Erykah Badu in “On and On”.

“The man that knows something knows that he knows nothing at all.”

This lesson can be dispelled in many different life applying ways, but for me – it gave me these hideaway gems that I always guide my life by:
1. Always be a student, any and everywhere you go.
2. The “game” isn’t rigged, if you view your competition, peers, anybody as just another human being trying to figure things out, than what makes them bigger than you? That thought helps me refrain from imposter syndrome, or the thought that someone’s celebrity, or influence could trump what I have to offer the world. I’m a big deal too.
3. And again, in life – as soon as you think you know something, you don’t! LOL just enjoy the life you’re given and stop being hung up on society’s pressure of who you should be or what you should know.

Love Badu-isms,,,,

What should our readers know about your business?
Breakfast at Six was founded on the simple passion of helping women feel and look their best when it comes to one of the most deepest, yet under-rated parts of what we wear – (our lingerie). When I first started Breakfast at Six, I was hand-making lingerie for mainly brides-to-be, I would sit down with them 1:1 and hear their story, what excites them, how they want to feel in these pieces, and even honing in on their excitement to show it off to their partner once all is said and done.

Almost every time I would finish a client project, they would come back asking if I could make more, everyday type of lingerie pieces for them, and even then – I would ultimately create these theme like pieces that were fun, custom, and captures their personality in the bedroom more than any brand off the shelf could. No matter how large of a brand Breakfast at Six becomes, I want every customer to feel like they had a 1:1 experience in shopping with us; that not only are they buying lingerie from us, but they feel comfortable enough to engage and just have girl chat, open up about things that we all can relate to as women, girlfriends, wives, etc.. and really feel like they have a brand they can call “home”, for all of their intimate needs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the morning we are hitting the best breakfast/brunch spots, I love how flexible restaurants have become since Covid shutdown, so I’d say let’s grab a cute picnic basket and fill it with tons of food to-go, and find a chill spot to kick it at!

About mid-day, we do our boutique shopping and get dressed for a concert happening later on in the day. I like spontaneous things, so just finding something to wear on the go, in my opinion, helps spark your creative side and eliminates the stress AND TIME that it may take to get ready if were just hanging around the house until… lol

I like all types of music, so the concert could be this growing travel band that does R&B covers, or maybe it’s a once in a lifetime event where it pushes our edges back. I like to brag that I’ve been to two of those types of concert. ONE being front row to Beyonce and Beychella 2018, I mean- LIFE !!! And the other, a Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake concert that we were gifted tickets to for my husband and I’s wedding, it was a wedding gift that was given to create memories, and that’s what we’re all about. Some other great mentionables are Frankie Beverly and Maize (I’m in Detroit, so how could I not?), Erykah Badu and Kanye West Sunday Service Live. I love living in Detroit because it’s such a soulful city, not only does it bring music acts from all calibers, because of it’s history, but the central location of Detroit makes for a memorable time whether it’s Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall.

After our day of exciting, planned randomness is complete, me and my bestie know that we are DONE lol admittedly I am beyond the after party life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
ABSOLUTELY! I would love to recognize and give a shout out to Donyale Walton, Founder of Hoop Mobb. She is creating an amazing community around a culture statement, the hoop earring, and it’s pretty dope!
