We had the good fortune of connecting with Quinetta `A. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quinetta, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite affirmation is “Control you and let everything else go”. It has been my daily mantra everyday since my therapist mentioned it to me. It reminds me that I cannot make my life go a certain way, but I can control me and how I contribute to life and others. Also, with that being said, I control what others contribute to me as well. I find a way to center myself when I say it and find peace. Once I remember who I am and the boundaries I set up, I release the unnecessary stress and flow with the purpose.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is called 80Twenty. It is named after my mother and grandfather’s birthdays. I have loved unique sunglasses since I could remember. I always bought the funky, eccentric ones, but they were a rare find. I used to be in the rabbit hole of EBay to find some. One day, I told myself that I wanted to sell shades that makes a person feel complete and ties their persona in to who they decide to be that day. Sadly, it took me almost six years to finally bring it into fruition. I was fearful that I was going to fail and that the whole thing sounded stupid. The day that someone invested in me to start was the beginning of birthing my business. It is not easy and definitely not an overnight success, but being a one-woman business, I am everything from the content creator to the site manager to running my own tea. [lol] I am happy that this is something I do love because I would have gave up long ago if it was not. I am learning how to stay on trend and what appeals to my audience and more. Once this is on a routine, I will be ready to expand to other ventures so stay tuned.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It is hard to think of places to go with the way the world is working right now. I am a foodie, so that means that my friends are foodies as well. If they are flying in, I will tell them to go to Ludacris’ Chicken N Beer restaurant. I had some of the best food there for an airport. For breakfast, I would take them to Nana’s in Conyers. They have amazing red velvet chicken and waffles, fried green tomatoes and mimosas. Tacos and Tequilas or Grindhouse Burgers (both in Decatur) is more than likely where I would do dinner. For a snack, I would take them to Tea Leaf and Creamery (Decatur) or we would go out to either Krog Market or Ponce City Market and walk around to enjoy the view and vendors. Ponce City Market also has a rooftop view with a restaurant/bar and have movie nights up there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I send my entire heart to my mother, Jan. I know it is cliche, but I would not have started my business when I did if it was not for her. She invested into me to get started and stayed up with me while I was getting a name and setting everything up. This business was written in my journals over the course of 6 years, but fear truly held me back. Now, I do not even know why I was so scared, but because of her, I finally scratched it off my list. I also thanked her by naming part of my business after her so she knows I love her.
