We had the good fortune of connecting with Phylicia Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phylicia, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In a world where social media has become an integral part of our daily existence, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected. My vision was to cultivate a positive and inclusive social media community where real and diverse voices could thrive. I believe in the power of conversation to inspire, connect, and uplift others, and I wanted to create an online space where people from all walks of life could come together to share their experiences, perspectives, and wisdom. Through sharing our stories, perspectives, and advice, we can discover our shared humanity and celebrate our similarities and differences.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sure! I have a background in public health, holding a Master’s degree in Public Health. I’ve spent the last few years working as a public health data analyst at the CDC. Balancing my professional commitments with my passion for creating content on social media has been a challenge, but it’s also helped me grow and develop new skills along the way, like time management and prioritization. Both of my jobs are very rewarding. I love that I get to help people in a more tangible way through my public health work, while also aiming to share inspiration and encouragement through the content I create.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The ATL Beltline is one of my all-time favorite spots in the city. I love to go for a jog, grab a bite to eat, bar hop, or lay out a blanket and chill at the park there. I also shoot most of my Humanity Speaks content there. It’s somewhere I feel very comfortable. Not to mention there’s always free events happening there. Never a dull moment!
As far as nightlife– I love to go out and dance, so my favorite place in the city right now is Johnny’s Hideaway. It’s an old school dance bar where the DJ exclusively plays music from 70s-90s. I usually go alone and always make new friends on the dance floor. It’s always a 10/10 night at Johnny’s! I also love Holiday Bar in West Midtown! Always great music, great drinks, and a great crowd.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, thank you God for the opportunity to do what I love. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my family and friends for their unwavering support, invaluable advice, and constructive feedback. A special acknowledgment goes to my younger brother, Phillex, who films most of my content, and has been my main source for creative feedback. Last but not least, thank you to all of the kind strangers who stop and let me interview them. I quite literally could not do Humanity Speaks without you all!!
