We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
As cliché as it sounds, I honestly think my community of followers and supporters are the most important factor behind my success. I’ve said it from the beginning, I’m not here to step on toes or go to war with anyone in this space. I’m in my own lane creating authentic recipes and challenging not just myself but others to step their culinary game up. I think a lot of my followers genuinely appreciate that and push me to be the best cook I can possibly be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So two years ago, I lost my job of eight years during the initial global pandemic. To save money, my family and I decided to cook more at home. While cooking one day, I started watching Joshua Weissman on YouTube and endless episodes of MasterChef on Hulu. I admired Joshua because he took being a home cook to the next level with unique content, an organic approach to growing a fanbase, and entertained millions with it. I admired the cooks on Masterchef for following their dreams and having the honor of cooking for the legendary Gordon Ramsey. I knew from watching these amazing individuals that I wanted to pursue a creative career taking a long standing passion of mine in cooking and make it a reality.
I decided one day to record a few of my recipes and looking back on them, they were awful! Not the taste of course but the presentation, the lighting, and the angles. I began to practice more with different editing styles, invested in ring lights and a better camera, even started making recipes from scratch, and that became my thing. One day in December of 2021, one of my videos went viral and from there, my social media influence just grew. I started getting comfortable with being on camera, doing voiceovers, and even making authentic recipes from scratch! A few of my videos have gotten the attention of celebrities and have even resulted in me being booked for private chef gigs and catering.
It hasn’t been easy and definitely came with some sacrifices, some hard lessons, and some unfortunate truths. But one thing I will let everyone know is that I wouldn’t change a damn thing!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great spots to visit in Delaware! I would definitely take them to Torbert Social in Wilmington. Amazing appetizers, arguably the best seafood grilled cheese anywhere, and the drinks are amazing! We’d probably go to Constitution Yards as well which is right by the riverfront. Its perfect during the spring/summer when its nice outside and you can enjoy some games and a beer with good people. There’s also Main Street in Newark which has a lot of great bars, restaurants, and spots to just kick back and relax!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for making all things possible and giving me the opportunity to showcase my talents to the world. I want to thank my wife for the long nights up helping me with editing, recording, providing feedback, and continuous support. I thank my kids for giving me honest feedback about my meals because they’re so picky but love everything that I make. I want to thank my family for believing in me and helping to get the Cooking With Pat Lee movement up and running from the beginning. Lastly, I want to thank my community on Instagram and TikTok. Thank you for sharing my content, for rooting me on, and supporting me! A lot of this seems unreal at times, especially when people tell you that they look up to you. It’s a different level of responsibility that I take on with pride and I love each and every single one of you for it!
