We had the good fortune of connecting with Okoye Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Okoye, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started own label because it gives me complete and full control of my artistic expression. I’ve always been an entrepreneur and come from and, entrepreneurial family. Believe me when I say signing yourself is the best thing that you could do. You’re in every aspect of the word. No one to answer to but you. I look forward to be able to providing that same feeling of freedom to other Artist & Producers that’s looking not to have their creative nature suppressed,

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I founded Sicario Records earlier this year. I landed on Sicario because it means “hitman” in Spanish, and over here we make hits lol. Just sounds cool too I think. I’ve been creating music for a while now. It’s in my blood. But, I decided to start a label and just focus on the music I would like to make, simply because I get to do it my way. I’m more boom bap, original hip hop with a newer twist. I try not conform to todays standard about what’s “hot”. I think that what sets me apart from mainstream hip hop/rap. I’ve learned that you can get exactly what you deserve and feel better about yourself if you just stick to what makes you, you. Authenticity is almost a rarity these days, because it seems like everyone wants to “fit in”. So if you’re being authentic and being your true self, you’ll stand out more. But, it’s been a journey. Starting a label from the ground up isn’t easy or pleasant sometimes but, I appreciate every experience that comes with it. It builds character and adds more to the story..

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So my most favorite spot is the studio!! Lol. I have all kinds of people that come through and we enjoy ourselves and have a good time while creating. Cooking on the grill, playing spades, discuss life experiences etc. Afterwards, I’d probably take them a place called Chairs on Main Street in East Point. It’s a cool bar to meet people and kick it. Play pool have a few drinks and share some laughs with a complete stranger. On Thursdays do they do karaoke there, which is always a fun time.

Of course you have to go to the strip clubs when you visit Atlanta. Magic city is my favorite because the food is great. Some of the best food you can get in a strip club lol. The atmosphere makes you feel like you “made it’ so to speak.

Little 5 points is a place I go to hang out too. It’s a melting pot down here. I enjoy going to Vortex when I’m down there.

I also like the Ponce area as well. There’s a couple bars and restaurants that you can go to around there. I like going to Ponce market. There’s couple food places there and shops. The Beltline is right there too so you can get on a scooter/ walk it to Krog Street Market.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my family for providing a solid foundation for me to become the man I am today. My dad, mom, siblings, and my many cousins in South Carolina. My family has always allowed every one of us to be able to express ourselves without judgement. I love every one of them for that.

I’d also like to shoutout Atlanta for the an amazing city full of culture. It is truly a place where you can cultivate you dreams and ideas. Atlanta is full of life and has all kind of creativeness in its nooks & crannies. With its amazing art & music scene it’s easy to network and meet people that could possibly open doors for you or learn something from.
