We had the good fortune of connecting with Nika Tolbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nika, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business had started when I decided to go to school for my profession. A couple of months into school I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia- which is a chronic Illness of widespread muscle pain, fatigue and so much more. I wanted to create a business that would allow me to eventually work less or not at all and still be creating generational wealth for my children.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career field is in the beauty industry. From skincare to waxing to lash extensions to brow shaping and body contouring. I specialize in waxing- brazilian specifically, brow shaping and lash extensions. I wax fast and effectively completing waxes in 15mins or less depending on the hair type. My brow shaping skills are unique, precise and I can create a brow arch when one would think it’s impossible. With lash extensions, I can complete a lash set in 1hr to 1hr 30min, when the average person completes it in 2hr or longer. I am super proud of my skills because I never thought that I was good at anything until I chose this profession. I love that I am able to make my clients happy and keep them coming back. I am also proud to be the first one in my family to step out of faith and become a business owner. I got where I am today by the grace of God, patience and a few resources. It was not easy because you want to make sure you’re doing everything right so it was kinda hard getting information on exactly what it was that I needed to do to get started, to become a successful business and stay one. We did open our doors March 17, 2020, exactly one week before the shutdown happened due to the pandemic. I did not prepare so I was not prepared nor had any expectations on this happening. It was a roller coaster getting through that time being closed but once we were able to reopen we make a killing and have been thriving ever since.

I want the world to know that no matter how much I love my job, my clients and no matter the reasons why I started I am still the girl who suffers daily from an invisible disease that nobody can see and only I can feel. The daily struggles to get out of bed, being a mom, being positive, it’s not easy. But through prayer and God anything is possible and you have to try to be stronger than what’s inside of you. You can be and do anything you put your mind to.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I just moved to the city so I am not quite yet familiar with places

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God first and foremost deserves all of the credit but my kids also for being my motivation to be the best version of me so that I can provide for them in ways that I didn’t have growing up. To my man for getting me into my first suite rental right out of school and to my clients that has kept me going and supported my business since August 2018.
