We had the good fortune of connecting with Muffdeezy DaDon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Muffdeezy, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Boss Bae University (BBU) is a creative space that equips entrepreneurs (and future entrepreneurs) with all of the skills necessary to start and run a successful business. BBU helps the community by hosting events such as seminars, expos, popup shops and courses that give upcoming entrepreneurs opportunities to expand their businesses. Through these opportunities, there is always a constant flow of learning, networking, and recirculating funds within our community.

BBU was formed an urban community stricken by poverty. We aim to change that narrative of poverty in our communities by teaching the principles of hustling, and being the best version of yourself that you can be.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I currently own two businesses. My first baby is Deezy’s Playhouse, a women’s boutique that believes in being yourself. No matter if your style is ratchet, ghetto, classy, upscale, bougie, I pride my brand on being you, UNAPOLOGETICALLY. My message is, “People talked about Jesus, they’ll talk about you. Dress how you want, do what you want, live how you want!”

When I created Deezy’s Playhouse in 2018, I was a social worker, but my appearance didn’t necessarily fit what you would think to be a social worker. I would get looks of revulsion because I like long nails, long hair, and fluffy eyelashes. Once I spoke and my work was noticed, everyone’s perception of me changed. I created Deezy’s Playhouse to have an outlet to be able to express my love for fashion with a judgement free eye.

Deezy’s Playhouse became successful, and it raised questions from others in the community on how I did it. I began talking with other entrepreneurs giving them pointers and tips on how to grow their businesses. Boss Bae University was born to be an official means to help other entrepreneurs. I’m a little handy with a computer, so I began creating marketing materials and graphic designs to help myself and others boost their sales and social presence. The more I worked the more I realized there weren’t a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase their brands and products, so I decided I’d bring the opportunities myself! I also know how it is to be broke in the beginning. I strategized a way to help entrepreneurs who are still in start up stage and may not have many funds to invest in expensive coaches and courses to help them. In December of 2020, I launched a book and eBook to help those who may need the extra assistance. I’ve been able to educate and help hundreds of people and that’s what makes me happy!

With any business there will be challenges, however, I had to master the skill of optimism and keep grinding. BBU is different from others because it’s not just about one person. The University metaphorically represents the community. The principal, the professors, the students, the coaches, even the lunch lady all play a role in making things operate smoothly. The more entrepreneurs BBU can grow, the more we can continue to grow our communities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Birmingham has some pretty interesting places to check out. I’m a chicken connoisseur and a night owl. We would HAVE to get a 10 piece hot lemon pepper with cajun ranch cheese fries with a KiKi Pooh. For short you can just say, “TPHLPWCRCFAAKKP” and Birmingham would automatically know what you mean! lol. When I need brainstorming time, I can take a walk around Railroad Park to look at the scenery. When it gets to be hang out time I like to visit Euphoria Sports Bar and Hookah Lounge, there’s a lot of urban graffiti art to admire and I get to stand on couches.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a MAJOR shoutout to the city of Birmingham, AL! Birmingham shows a lot of love to all of BBU’s events and my boutique as well. It can be difficult to gain the support of a city and have everyone behind you. I’m blessed to be able to have the opportunity to have my city uplift me.

I also would like to shoutout my family for being such an amazing support system. Juggling 2 businesses and being a single mother of 2 can get overwhelming and exhausting, My family is always there to encourage me to go harder and keep pushing.
