We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikaela Grissom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikaela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been working a job since I was 15 years old, a 10th grader in high school. I always hated having to work for such little pay, having to take orders from people I didn’t feel like I should have to take orders from and just hating having to go to a job that I didn’t want to be at everyday. I felt like this no matter what job I was working. I always knew I wanted to work for myself and when college didn’t work out for me I decided to make a change. I knew I wanted my own business but didn’t know what type or how I would even start. I’ve always been obsessed with my skin and wanting it to be clear so I decided to go to esthetician school so I could learn how to fix my skin and I ended up falling in love with it. So my thought process was just simply being tired of living my life working for others, I wanted to live my life on my own terms so that’s what I’m doing now.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a licensed Esthetician focusing on corrective skincare, brow and Brazilian waxing. It definitely wasn’t easy getting here. I dropped out of college after wanting to become a Veterinarian all my life. I felt like a failure and didn’t know what to do with my life. But I knew there was a certain type of life I wanted to be able to live so I decided to go to esthetics school and become my own boss. On the way I’ve truly learned that nothing happens overnight. Every single day is a stepping stone and you have to take advantage of every single day to get to where you want to be. I want the world to know that Empress Esthetics truly wants to make change in our clients lives. Helping them change their skin, overcome their insecurities and become more confident in their selves and their skin is my top priority. We all deserve to feel like the baddest in the room!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Food, food, and more food. There’s not a bad food place in Atlanta. The Zoo is always fun, the aquarium, Six Flags, etc.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always want to recognize my boyfriend for pushing me to go after what I want and always reminding me of what I deserve.
