We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickenzie Tolen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mickenzie, what do you want people to remember about you?
Wow, that is a deep question. I want my legacy to be that first I love God, without Him I wouldn’t be where I am today. Second that I love my family. My husband is my rock! My kids are my world. And third that I love people. I truly do love seeing people smile, making people happy. It sounds silly because I am in the cookie business but sometimes that small escape of a good dessert can just make your day! Or after a long day at work, you put the kids to bed, grab a glass of milk, watch your favorite TV show and enjoy a cookie. It’s the small things.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have four kids and have always loved a good birthday party theme! I baked all of their goodies and friends and family would tell me I should sell but I didn’t want to lose the joy and love of baking. And I also have self doubt that creeps in a lot. I wanted to make decorated sugar cookies for my daughters birthday and decided I would teach myself how to do it. I fell in love with the creation of edible art. I watched endless videos, read tips, joined groups and practiced all the time. Of course my kids didn’t mind eating the practice cookies! Decorating cookies really is a form of art and expression. It allows me to escape and just create. And then you get to enjoy the taste and eat it. Just like any other art form I’m constantly growing and learning. I have so many cookiers I admire and aspire to be like. Seeing my creations help people celebrate big life milestones; birthdays, gender reveals, graduations, baby showers and so many more really makes me feel connected and as if I am also a part of their celebration. It hasn’t been easy, it’s been a lot of all nighters, lack of sleep, juggling social media, orders, kids, family and life! But it’s been so worth it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have such an amazing support system. My friends and family always told me I should sell my cookies. When I first decided to start selling the support from my family was overwhelming. With four kids it really does take a village to start any new adventure. My husband, he is amazing. He supports me, encourages me and pushes me outside of my comfort zone. When I feel like I am not good enough, he reminds me that I am talented, amazing and determined. To keep going. My family is my biggest supporter. Always reminding me how proud they are of me, what an inspiration I am. I have an amazing circle.
