We had the good fortune of connecting with Micah “Mickey” Chapman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Micah “Mickey”, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
A deep relationship with God, being optimistic and connecting with people that want to see me succeed. These habits help motivate me to keep going when times are tough and I feel like giving up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the Co-Founder and Director of Hip-Hop CHA in Chattanooga, TN. Hip-Hop CHA aims to promote inclusion through hip-hop centric events all across Chattanooga. We are a collective who started in October 2016 as a platform for local artists and hip-hop fans to network and created opportunities to perform and highlight their music. We’ve hosted networking events, beat-making courses, artist showcases, a DJ Battle (2017), Chattanooga’s 1st Hip-Hop Festival (2017), and the Chattanooga Hip-Hop Summit (2019,2021). In August 2021, we requested and received a proclamation officially acknowledging Chattanooga Hip-Hop Week (Oct 10-16) from the city of Chattanooga signed by Mayor Tim Kelly. My success at booking music venues, festival performances and live concert gigs for Chattanooga Hip-Hop artist Kay B Brown created the opportunity for me to work with others and do it for hip-hop in Chattanooga. One of the most exciting moments in my life is planning and organizing Chattanooga Hip-Hop Week. I love working with my team and watching our ideas manifest into reality. I believe my teamwork skills is what set me apart from others.

It was a pretty smooth path to get here although we expected to face a few challenges on the way. We knew it’ll be difficult gaining support from the community and the city of Chattanooga as a whole but our efforts remained consistent and eventually we gained their support over time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If they’re a BBQ lover, I’ll take them to get the best BBQ in the world at Chatter Box Cafe. We’ll feast on some tender, juicy, fall off the bone ribs (beef or pork), smoked chicken wings topped with their in house rub and BBQ sauce, and sliced beef brisket smoked to perfection served with southern made-from-scratch sides. There’s a popular karaoke bar in downtown Chattanooga, Sing it or Wing it. The mixed drinks are great and who doesn’t love karaoke? This place is always fun waiting to happen. If you’re into cigars or hookah, the Chattanooga Cigar & Hookah lounge is also located in downtown Chattanooga and offers a premier experience for smokers and patrons who are looking for an exclusive spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my mother (Norma Chapman), my team (Hip-Hop CHA & Chattanooga Hip-Hop Summit) and my church. (The Word Empowerment Church, Chattanooga TN)

I appreciate the love that I receive from them on a consistent basis. Their support encourages me to accomplish my goals and motivate me to reach my full potential. I thank God for placing these great people in my life.
