We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Colemon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I think that the most important thing that I have done as a parent in terms of impacting my now grown adult daughters was to complete and receive my college degree. I attended college immediately after graduating from high school in the fall of 1986. I attended college for 2 years before dropping out to go into the Marine Corps. I later met and married my husband of 34 years and we started our family. In 1992 we relocated to Atlanta, GA and I began my federal career with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. After my daughters were in middle school, I made the decision to go back to school and complete my degree. My main focus was to be an example for my daughters, that I could attend college as an adult, while holding down a full time job and raising two beautiful daughters. My decision to go back to college and complete my degree was one of the best decisions that I have made in my life. I wanted my daughters to know that the sky is the limit and that they could do anything that they set their minds to. Both of my daughters are college educated, my oldest has a Masters Degree and is a successful Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), married with 3 children. My youngest is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and is working on opening her own Physical Therapy business. Education was very important in our house raising our children, I always reminded my daughters that education was something that no one could take from them, and to always strive to be the best in whatever career path they would chose to obtain.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our family moved to Atlanta, GA after myself and my husband served in the US Marine Corps, Shortly after our relocation, I began my work career at the Department of Veterans Affairs. I thought to myself what an appropriate job career, seeing that I am a veteran. I loved working with other veterans and it was always a goal to assist others trying to secure their veterans benefits after serving their country. In December 2024 I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration with over 34 years of service. I absolutely loved my job as a Human Resources Program and Management Analyst for over 360 plus employees with the National Cemetery Administration. Providing final resting places and memorializing the service and sacrifice of Veterans and their next of kin in our national cemeteries was a very fulfilling career.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in Atlanta and that’s one of the things I love about the versatility here. I am such a foodie so the weekend would be filled with restaurants such as Jinya, Toast on Lenox, Politan Row and Stony River Steakhouse. Of course shopping is always on the agenda so I would take them to Lexox Mall for some retail therapy. Another awesome hidden gem is Chateau Elan for some great tasting wines and charcuterie boards.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves all of the credit, love and encouragement because we always have each others back. We love unconditionally and are always there to support one another. My husband and my daughters are my rock and my grandchildren have my heart. My family has always supported me from day one, They encouraged me when I was attending school and working to keep going. In our family we make it a habit to support, uplift and love one another no matter what life throws our way.
