We had the good fortune of connecting with Melinda Galette and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melinda, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I’d say the principle I value most is self-love. I feel like our generation and those after are so highly influenced by the media and what they interpret to be the lives of others, they neglect who they truly are in the process. I myself being someone with experience in such. As an adolescent into my twenties, I struggled with self-image, love, and appreciation. I wanted so badly to look like my light-skinned cousins with the nice breast, flat stomach, wide hips, and big butt. I’d often stared in the mirror making myself see someone that wasn’t there, then take a picture and cry over the lenses and my imagination not being in sync. My journey to self-love took many years and tears. Time I would have given anything to have the mindset I do now. I love this woman I became, I celebrate her body, her courage, and her whit. I’m nothing short of thankful for her having saved herself, to become an inspiration to others.
What should our readers know about your business?
Moi, pronounced mwä, the French word for me, it differs from other brands in its purpose. Moi is more than cute women’s athleisure wear. It’s a mindset, essentially a mirror in the form of an outfit. I handpick each set before its release. I test every outfit, ensuring it’s durable, functional, as well as beautiful. Envisioning the little girl I once was, desperately searching for something to love in her appearance.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A friend visiting the city would have to experience the beltline both early afternoon then evening. Breakfast would have to be spontaneous, I haven’t discovered my it spot for that yet, lunch would be Poke Burri at the battery, or Tokyo Sushi & Steak House. Dinner something Mediterranean, preferably Greek. I also enjoy Blu Seafood house. As for hangouts we’re having drinking at the Garden room, Red Martini and Pasha.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, first and foremost, I’ll always thank God, this dream isn’t new, I’ve wanted this brand since I discovered my love for self and fitness. But I strayed, I wasn’t ready to dedicate the time, energy nor effort it took nor takes to run your own business. God never let me get comfortable with anything though, I’m sure I am one of his problem children cause I truly am hard-headed. Secondly, my parents and siblings, I know that family is supposed to cheer you on, root for your success, but they do not have to finance nor allow you to vent aimlessly when frustrated. We’re all individual adults now, but my vital four, have ALWAYS come through. Whatever I needed and if they didn’t have whatever it was, they helped me find resources. That’s so important. Money isn’t everything, I wish we preached more the importance of having people pour into you. There were days all I had were ideas, not a single thought was clear, but my vital four, they helped me realign, assign, get focused, then execute. I’m so thankful. Lastly, my friends, every last person who purchased a set, reposted my website/pictures/post and spoke my name in rooms without my knowledge. Thank you Lorielle Jackson!
