We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Huff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
A lot of time goes into creating recipe content from buying ingredients, props, equipment, etc. to filming, editing, writing captions, posting, and engaging with my audience. I also am the one responding to emails, pitching myself to brands and restaurants, keeping track of expenses, miles driven, filing taxes, and more. Sometimes balancing this side hustle with a full-time job is tough, so having good time management skills is important.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a registered dietitian for just about one year! I’ve done content creation on the side since 2019. The journey to becoming a dietitian is not an easy one. It requires a 4-year degree (now a Master’s is required), a 1200-hour supervised practice internship, and passing a national board exam. I completed my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and my dietetic internship at Emory University Hospital.
I was inspired to pursue a career in nutrition after I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This was the reason I adopted a gluten-free diet. I was intrigued by how nutrition can influence your health and help manage chronic disease. Living with non-celiac gluten intolerance, my goal is to be a resource for people looking for gluten-free recipes, restaurants, and products. It always makes me excited when someone asks for gluten-free recommendations.
I also just started my own nutrition counseling private practice!
There’s definitely been challenges with being a content creator from the ever-changing algorithm to learning how to communicate effectively with brands and businesses to balancing this side hustle alongside my full-time job.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up in California, and most recently lived in Atlanta for the past 2 years. I just moved to Maryland, but here is my itinerary for a day in Atlanta.
Coffee at Prevail Union
Grab some gluten-free pastries at Hell Yeah Gluten-Free bakery
Visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden or take a stroll through Piedmont Park
Dinner at O-ku
Catch an Atlanta Hawks, Braves, or Atlanta United game!
I’ve done all of the touristy things in Atlanta, so I love finding the more local/niche things to do!
Some other fun activities are taking a pottery class, attending a Georgia Vintage Goods event, the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market (my favorite gluten-free vendors are Phat Yuca and Love It! Gluten-Free).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my mom, who has been my biggest supporter since day one. Even before I launched my @sayimafoodie Instagram page, I started a food blog and wrote Yelp reviews, where I shared my passion for food and photography. It was my mom who first encouraged me to start a blog in high school after hearing from a college fair that it would be a good extracurricular activity to add to my resume. That initial push led to the creation of my food Instagram, and the rest is history.
