We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlana Smedley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marlana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was working in Human Resources for a software development company when covid happened and like most people at the time, I was unsure if I was going to keep my job. I started Alexa Reece Boutique to have something of my own that I knew I could do from home with my kids and as a backup plan in case I lost my job due to the pandemic. Thank God that didnt happen but I wanted to keep going and see where it would take me. Fastforward a year later and lots of prayer, we decided it was time to leave my full time HR position to go all in with the business.

What should our readers know about your business?
My boutique is not just about clothes, it’s about building relationships and connecting with people. I have chatted with customers for 30 minutes or longer talking about their life and struggles they’ve gone through and how things are turning around for them. If it weren’t for starting this business, I might not have gotten the chance to connect with them. I love what I do and have big plans for the future and the direction of my business. I’ve always seen this as a way to connect with women and offer help in any way that I can, whether that be selling them an item that makes them feel fabulous for an event or being there to listen when they need someone to talk to.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Where do I start. My husband, mom, and family believed in me and pushed me to chase this dream of mine. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and felt like I was being called to start the business. I joined a small group at my church in February and met 3 other amazing women who were in the same exact boat as me. They were trying to decide if it was time to leave their full time jobs to start their business as well. It was the sign from God that I needed to know I was making the right decision. God has put amazing people in my life to help grow in this space and I am beyond grateful. I’m also extremely grateful for Brandi Raines. Brandi is an influencer from Georgia and has helped me to grow my presence and brand awareness online especially in the e-commerce and social media areas. There have been ups and downs but my family has been there through it all encouraging me to keep going and to not give up.
