We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Cloud and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marie, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Ha, feel like all I do is make decisions…white walls or greige walls. lol Well, early in this career, designers want to take on as many projects as possible to build their portfolio, and it was the same for me. But when I got to a place where that was no longer a need, I started to say no to certain projects; those that didn’t align with my goals or weren’t fitting for my aesthetic or bandwidth. Those first few no’s were the hard decisions that got easier over time. It meant I was entering a new stage of my career. I’m a doer and I like to stay busy, but saying no was like me putting a stake in the ground and drawing boundaries that would best serve me and my business in the long run.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Indigo Pruitt Design Studio is an interior design firm servicing clients in both North and South Carolina; known for our blended style approach to aesthetics. My goal is to simply create a memorable design experience while enhancing the quality of life for my clients, all while applying the highest standards of excellence in design. My design style is known for its play on transitional living, typically a mix of old and new elements within a project. This blend of contemporary features and charming details has proven to be the best complement to my clients’ lifestyles. These days the trendy and predictable design is what is typically found on Pinterest and blogs. But a space that is expressive, storytelling, beautiful, and yet livable is a timeless treasure. That is the narrative I aim to create in clients’ homes. I spend a lot of time with my clients early in the design process. The first stage of the process is called “discovery,” so I spend time doing just that – getting to know them and getting a feel of whether we will work well together. I also like getting to know how they operate within their space, their family, their likes and dislikes. This helps ensure the space truly reflects them and not just me and my style.

Aside from the typical yet realalistic, “I worked hard” response, I’m where I am today because I study my mistakes and shortcomings. It has been a journey of learning by trial, error, and experience. I did not have all the answers when I started, and I still don’t. I must continue to be a student who is always willing to perfect my craft and evolve as an entrepreneur. One crucial lesson that I have learned that has served me well is to ask for what I want. That sounds generic, but I’ve become comfortable with figuring out what I want and asking for it. In spaces where I would have shrunk back in the past because I didn’t feel welcome, I’ve learned to create my own invitation and ask for what I want until I get it. That is what I want the world to know…that I am here because I deserve to be. And that my talents and skills are gifts that I am to use in the world! I hope that my story and my designs inspire hearts to live freely within a space and take those chances that sets your soul on fire.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Restaurant & drinks – Hawkers Asian Street Food -Their pad thai is so delicious!

Jeni’s Ice cream
-Literally you can get anything, and your mouth would be in heaven,

*Both places are in South End Charlotte.

We will then go to Kate’s Skating Rink and skate until our feel hurt!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m a part of a women’s group called “Just for Us.” This group has been pivotal for my business confidence and teniousity. These women have encouraged, challenged and supported me as I have evolved into the woman I am today. And of course I’m going to shoutout my momma! lol Carmonlita has helped mold and cultivate my strengths, challenge my weaknesses and encourages me every step of the way.
