We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I believe entrepreneurship has been in my blood since my youth. I remember starting my lawn cutting service in the neighborhood when I was 10 and earning money to buy my first 10″ black and white tv (I know I’m dating myself). And then in high school our economics class had the highest grossing Junior Achievement project in the area. We created a business, sold shares of stock and had a phenomenal outcome. It’s always been there so when I got older, I pulled on that and coupled it with a passion that I got from my father in photography. Every since then it’s been an incredible ride.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am honored and humbled, thanks. I’m a photographer, specializing in Real Estate Photography. I love helping my awesome agents sell homes quickly by providing amazing images to make each listing stand out. I also provide floor plans, aerial images and my goal is to position myself as a part of their team. As a photographer, I’m always looking for an edge and sometimes that comes in ways other than through the lens. In the world of real estate photography, there is so much in the connections. One of the first real estate agents I worked with was so instrumental in my growth in this area. To be honest I didn’t know what I was doing when I started working in this area so many years ago (I majored in portrait work for years but never ventured into real estate) but I wanted to try. Well, I sucked at first, but Sheena Baker who is a top 2% agent in Chicagoland was dope enough to share feedback and express what she needed rather than give up on me. Because I chose to listen, I studied, learned and developed the skills necessary to grow at a rapid rate. I will never forget that. I take that into everything I do now. I want to make sure every listing I shoot, no matter the price of the home, looks as amazing as it can.

In addition to Real Estate Photography, I also photograph high school & college graduates, headshots and personal branding photography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many cool things to do in the area. I’d start with breakfast at one of our favorite spots, either FIrst Watch or Scrambled. You can’t really go wrong with either. I’m a pretty laid back dude, but since we are so close to the ocean it would be worth a quick drive to the ocean to hang out. If there were kids involved I’d highly suggest Sky Wild at the Greensboro Science Center. Then it’s off to Burger Warfare for lunch and Sweet Potatoes for dinner.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The absolute first goes to my Father, Phil Smith (RIP) because he’s the one that inspired the start. After that I have to shout out the 4 most incredible women in my life, my wife Erica, my daughters Kendyl and Kennedy and my mom, Ruth. There are so many countless others within the industry and if I start naming names I’ll be in trouble.
