We had the good fortune of connecting with Madelyn Powers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madelyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own crochet business was driven by a combination of passion, opportunity, and hope. Crocheting is a hobby that brings me joy, relaxation, and a sense of accomplishment. In basic terms, crocheting equals sanity to me. I noticed a growing trend and appreciation for handmade items- specifically crocheted items. I believed this would allow me the chance to offer my creations. I envision Life’s a Stitch Studio growing and evolving into a community, not only in Atlanta, GA and Dallas, TX.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One example of how our brand is set apart from the rest is the use of sustainable resources. We prioritize using “forgotten materials” such as yarn and buttons that would have otherwise never been used for their purpose; to create. Getting the Life’s a Stitch Studio brand where it is today was far from easy. It involved numerous challenges, including mental health obstacles. There were times of intense stress and self-doubt. The uncertainty of entrepreneurship amplified anxiety. What got me back into a level head-space was simple: crochet! Challenging my work and utilizing the nature of the effort-reward system associated with crocheting never fails to ground me.
Something I want the world to know about my story is the significant role crocheting plays in my journey to sobriety. Crocheting, for me, provides a therapeutic opportunity for creative expression. What initially drew in my curiosity about crochet was that I needed something to fill my time after getting sober and to distract me from cravings. It became a tool that helped me build a healthier, more fulfilling life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since Mckenzie (located in Atlanta, GA) and I (located in Dallas, TX) are split into 2 cities, when we meet in Atlanta we always meet in these spots:
1) Scraplanta- Located in Briarcliff Village, is a nonprofit that sells pre-loved art and supplies. They also host community events.
2)Craftivist- Located near Inman Park, this small yarn/fiber shop will wind your purchased yarn right before your eyes- talk about experiential purchase!
3) Lake Claire Community Land Trust- Located in Lake Claire, this neighborhood nonprofit hosts many community events such as drum circles and festivals. McKenzie also hosts crochet classes through Nature Play Studio at this location.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my step-mother and partner in the Life’s a Stitch Studio brand, McKenzie Lamm. Since I first learned to crochet in 2018, I have wanted to sell my creations. In January 2024, McKenzie encouraged and participated in the creation of Life’s a Stitch Studio. We launched our brand on February 1st, 2024 with a little extra help from social media and a website builder called Universe. McKenzie is a go-getting creative who represents Life’s a Stitch Studio in Atlanta, GA.
