Meet Laura Poteet | Family Lifestyle Photography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Poteet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As long as I can remember, I have always had a love for the arts, photography in particular. I have to give credit to my mom for instilling that love in me, and inspired me to pursue my passion in photography. My mom was incredibly creative and talented. She could look at anything or imagine something, and paint it beautifully, bringing it to life on canvas. Growing up, there was a conversation she and I had that stood out to me. It was about following our dreams. While my mom was naturally a very talented artist, and she dreamed of perusing that, she ended up taking a different path. Knowing that she and I shared the same passion for the arts, she told me she wished she would have followed her dreams, and encouraged me to follow mine.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about your brand and story?  
I am a lifestyle photographer, and my approach is to photograph as each genuine moment unfolds, providing candid and natural shots.

I am most proud of a couple of things. I am proud of how much I have grown and learned since I first started my business about 8 years ago. I am proud of the relationships I have established with families over the years, and the friendships that have formed. One of the biggest lessons I have learned along the way is to not be afraid of taking chances and stepping out of my comfort zone. Some of my favorite sessions and/or photographs are a result from doing so. What I want the world to know about my brand is when you work with me, it’s more than just meeting up and snapping a couple of pictures, it’s an experience. I genuinely want to get to know everyone I am photographing, and capture the essence of the individuals and families, their stories.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this question, but it is a tough one. With being a busy mom of both a baby, and 8 year old, the best time ever to me these days is lounging at home in comfy clothes and a movie night, ha!

Since the beautiful fall weather is upon us, it would be a fun mix of things. I love the outdoors, so for sure we would hike while taking in some of the beautiful fall scenery. Camping and a bonfire for sure! I think it would be fun to visit some of the wineries in North Georgia. A day at Avalon would be fun! We could start the day with brunch at Cafe Intermezzo, pamper ourselves at The Woodhouse Day Spa, shop, and enjoy some drinks at CRU Food & Wine Bar.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I cannot agree more, so many have come together to enable me to realize my ambition of growing my skills as a photographer and supporting my business. First and foremost, having my supportive parents and husband, who encouraged me to take the leap, and go after my dream to start my photography business. Having the encouragement of family, friends, and the pleasure of meeting and working with so many wonderful individuals and families throughout the years. They have all come together to help me achieve my goals of first being a photographer and second of building a business around my passion.
