We had the good fortune of connecting with Kynnesha Lupoe-Horsley, owner of Black Soap Queen, LLC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kynnesha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My ultimate thought process behind starting my own business was one word LEGACY. As a wife and mother of 6 children it became of utter importance for me to leave an amazing legacy behind with financial literacy and stability. In our community very rarely do we see or know of people leaving behind financial stability for their families after they’ve passed away. Also, I wanted to teach my children the rewards of entrepreneurship. All of the hard work, sweat and tears will all be worth it in the end because just as you’re pregnant with dreams, visions, goals and admirations with consistency you’ll surely birth award winning greatness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In 2017 I experienced unexpected health issues which caused me to undergo a major surgery that changed my life completely. During the recovery process my skin became even more sensitive and I began searching for different natural products. After a long period of research I started making soap and eventually making body butters, scrubs, herbal remedies and candles. After the amazing feedback that I received after gifting these items to family members, friends and coworkers I decided to launch my business and build my brand. Passion is probably what sets me apart from others. I’m passionate about my craft and I don’t take it for granted. The gifts that I’ve been blessed with are unmatched and I’m grateful and humbled by them all. The advice that I can give to aspiring soap and candle creators or just upcoming business owners is to stay passionate and consistent. Consistency is key even when the passion seems to dwindle.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely begin with the Georgia aquarium(night time) and of course Hattie Marie’s Texas BBQ for the dino beef ribs. The Corner Grille for the brunch and bottomless mimosas. We most definitely would have to go the Stuffy Dawg OMG mouth watering delicious super stuffed hotdogs. Boogalou Restaurant and lounge for karaoke night. Stopping by King Crab ATL. If they have any room left we would surely go to a peace of cake for a slice of amazing red velvet cake. Best trip ever.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandmother Judy J. Wilson passed away suddenly in 2011. It has always bothered me to know that she died before I could make her super proud of me. Everything that she instilled in me is still very present in my life today. I know without a doubt that I’m still living on the countless prayers that she prayed over me daily during her time on the earth. I can confidently say now that I’ve made her proud and that makes my heart smile.
