We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Cardinal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I feel like there is never the perfect time to start a business, you just need to go for it sometimes. So that was my mindset when I decided to start Sincerely, Roots, my natural and organic skincare/bath and body brand. I was 8 months pregnant with my 4th baby, it was during the pandemic, and I just really felt that deep in my heart that I needed to do this. I also had motivation in the form of my (at the time) 8 month old daughter. She was born with sensitive skin, and she also has eczema. I noticed that none of the products that we were buying on the market were helping her. She would get dry and bumpy red patches on her arms, legs, and torso. I just hated seeing her like that so I took it upon myself to start making a natural and organic soap that would help her. And now here we are:)
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always had a creative itch and I love working with my hands and designing. It translated well 8 years ago when I made my first bar of soap. It was so amazing learning the chemistry behind how soap was made and how different ingredients did different things to my finished soap bar – I was hooked.
Fast forward to today, I’ve decided to take my skill from being just a hobby to being more of a professional brand. I work very hard to make sure I am using natural and organic ingredients whenever possible. I pride myself on the fact that my soaps and bath products don’t have any synthetic fragrances, or colorants, and that I try to be as eco conscious as I can be with my packaging and materials.
I’ve learned a lot so far during my journey as a small business owner. One of the biggest takeaways being a product based small business owner is that you aren’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, and that it’s okay. I’m taking things one day at a time, and remembering to stay true to myself, and my brand. If I am confident in those things, then I’ll find my ideal tribe of customers and people who value my products as much as I do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely plan a weekend with lake views – cruising around Lake Lanier, maybe doing some wine tasting Montaluce Winery, and some shopping and fun at Skyline at Ponce City Market.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shout out to my mother-in-law Peggy. She probably thinks I’m crazy for having started my business when I did (in the midst of a pandemic, 8 months pregnant with my 4th baby), but she has always been very supportive and helpful anytime I had an idea or dream that I wanted to bring to life.
