We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Coulton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Other than deciding to work for me, the single most crucial decision I’ve made was promising myself to never give up. If at first, I didn’t succeed, I tried and tried again. I knew that if I wanted to obtain my goals and live the life I had envisioned for myself, I had to persevere through the unforeseen obstacles and self-doubt head-on. There’s a quote that I love from an anonymous person that says, Perseverance makes the difference between defeat and success. And knowing this, I wake up every morning actively striving towards my goals and helping others achieve theirs.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I express my art through my sense of fashion and helping others discover their style. What sets me apart from other stylists/content creators is my aesthetic and approach to styling. Rather than trying to fit my client into a specific category of style, I help them define and discover their own and express that through their looks. I am the most fulfilled when my clients feel confident in their new wardrobe and equipped with the fashion knowledge to expand independently. I’ve gotten to where I am today through forging strong relationships and building a solid reputation around my work. My career in fashion has been insightful and diverse. Some lessons worth mentioning are: experience is everything; a positive attitude will take you far; hard work never goes unnoticed, stay humble, and always give thanks! I want the world to know that you can control what you do and how you feel through the outfits you choose to wear. Dress how you imagined your best self would, and by doing so, you’ll move through life differently, more purposely, and optimistically. I want that feeling to be a reoccurring experience for you! I want to provide you with a gift that keeps on giving and the resources to do so. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting for the weekend, I would first take her to Krog Street Market! We would sample the best dish from my favorite restaurants, followed by Jeni’s ice cream! Then we would cut over to the Beltline and ride on the electric scooters or rollerblade to a rooftop brewery or HAWKERS, a tapas-style Asian fusion spot! And maybe afterward, check out Ponce City Market and the murals in Cabbagetown. The next day, we would go to Atlantic Station and the Buckhead Village District for a little retail therapy; after that, we would catch dinner at one of the restaurants in the outdoor plaza and end our night with drinks at The Garden Room. The next day I’d take her to all the Atlanta landmarks: CNN, Jackson Street Bridge, Coca Cola Factory. Etc, and end the night with KBBQ at Iron Age and a movie at a drive-in theatre in Sandy Springs.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my success and achievements first and foremost to my loving and supportive family! I must acknowledge the contribution of my Mom, Pamela Coulton, Brother Chakier Francis, and Boyfriend, David Quiles, as my greatest blessing and catalyst for success. Through their efforts, unconditional love, and monitorship, I can achieve anything. Likewise, I’m grateful to be surrounded by mentors and creatives that encourage me to pursue my passions and believe in my work’s value and importance as much as I do.
