We had the good fortune of connecting with Keziah Felak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keziah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk, I feel like, is often deemed a negative word – one that most people shy away from. But for me, risk has to be the number one factor that has lead me to where I am today. Taking risks are scary, I get it! But choosing to taking the risk is also an incredibly powerful feeling. Almost four years ago, I took a risk in starting a small stationery business that only offered invitations such as birthdays and bridal showers. I say risk, because I had no background in owning a business – or running a business. I actually always told myself that I would never start and own my own business because I didn’t think I had what it took to be successful. I did it anyway. I risked failing, never growing, overwhelming myself with two jobs. Fast forward to June 2020. I took another risk when I quit my “dream job” to go full time with my business that had taken off. Starting my business was a risk in itself – but going full time I knew was an even bigger risk. Every time I start to doubt myself and wonder “should I do this? Should I take the risk? What if, what if, what if?” I quickly remind myself and ask “But what if you don’t? What are you going to potentially miss out on?” So yes, risks are scary. The unknown is terrifying. But missing out on my purpose in life is even scarier. So take the risk!

What should our readers know about your business?
I own Bek Designs and specialize in custom wedding stationery, branding +website design and also focus on motivating other women just like me to go after their dreams and realize how much they are worth. When I first started my business I vowed to always create an exceptional experience for my clients and to live by “community > competition”. It was very important to me to create a brand that not only offered a service but an experience and I believe that has helped me achieve the level of success that I have. If your focus is on serving others and bettering their live with your product/service, the money will come. I also believe that if you put all of your energy into what you have in front of you, you won’t be distracted by what others in your field are doing. There is so much business to go around! Serve your clients well + focus on you and how you are building your brand and you’ll win every time. Practicing these two things has been very important in the success of my business, but don’t get me wrong – I’ve had my struggles too. I have failed countless times but at the end of the day you have to get back up and keep moving forward. Failure doesn’t mean you quit, it means you’ve learned something that doesn’t work. Businesses are built on discovering what does and doesn’t work. Remember that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ahhh, another good one because Augusta, Ga is brimming with so many great spots! We would definitely stop in at Craft and Vine and get their poutine and French 75. It’s such a vibe and the staff is wonderful! Abel Brown for dinner – their oysters and key lime pie is to die for. Lastly, espresso martinis at Cork and Flame to end the night because they are just the best in town and the ambiance is perfect! During the day though, we would visit the riverwalk downtown because there is so much to see and the views are spectacular! I seriously could go on and on about what Augusta offers – I just love my city! So many artists and local restaurants, you can’t really go wrong anywhere you go! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is a hard one because there are so many people that have influenced me + been my support system and cheerleaders. First off, thanking God for this life He’s given me + opportunities that have been put in my path. I also have to thank my husband, Andrew, for supporting me and always pushing me to go after my dreams. He’s my constant rock and is always down to have a margarita when it’s time! I also have to shoutout my business girl group – Sam, Katy, Shannon. They have been such amazing friends and inspire me daily not only as a business owner but also to be a better person all around.
