We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I created Courageous Films Production, the business initially started out as a hobby. My wife needed someone to film an interview for one of her class projects. I used my cell phone to record the video, then fired up Final Cut Pro to edit the video. I fell in love with the ability to craft and tell a story for some one through the power of cinematography.

From there, I would download stock clips (free b-roll I could find on the internet) and craft stories together to learn how to improve my video editing abilities. I also slowly started to purchase filming equipment to learn the basic concepts of a video camera and lighting. What started out as a casual hobby, turned into a business that has allowed me to tell the stories of countless people and shed light on many different businesses, ideas, and people from all walks of life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Courageous Films Production is video production company based out of Atlanta, Georgia. As many of you may know, Atlanta is the Hollywood of the South. The ability to stand out amongst large Hollywood film studios in Atlanta is tough, however, small indy film production companies like Courageous Film Production have a unique space here in Atlanta.

Not all clients have hundreds of thousands dollar production budgets. So what happens when an up and coming apparel company or a new micro-bewrery needs a company to tell their story and push their brand? This is where a indy film/production company like Courageous Films Production plays a vital role. We are able to meet the needs of clients who want to share their story via social media or through a marketing campaign push.

In the beginning, landing clients was tough. In business, you learn making connections are vital. Also having a portfolio of work is critical in video production. I would reach out to clients and ask if I could make a video for their company for free. If they liked the video, I would ask them to post it on their social media account. If they didn’t, they could delete it and not use it. But I would always request from the client feedback about their experience using our service and what areas could we improve in. This has allowed me to continue to grow and learn in areas that I might not have recognized as important. I learned there were areas I overlooked, but to my client, these were areas that were important to their business. A great quote I will always keep with me is, “the day you stop learning, is the day you stop existing.” You always have to be willing to learn and grow.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to Shoutout my wife, Kiana Coleman, who has pushed me to keep going with my dream. She is the marketing genius and business manager behind Courageous Films Production. Without her, I would not have any clients! LOL. In all seriousness, she has dedicated her love of being a Creative Director and Marketer, into taking my passion for Cinematography to new heights. I can’t thank her enough for all that she has done. Also, she will be launching her new marketing agency really soon!
