We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennie Nicole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennie Nicole, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I never felt like there was much of a choice. It wasn’t something I searched for. It’s what found me. When it came time to decide what I wanted to do with my life, taking a job for money and security never crossed my mind. All I wanted to do was find my purpose and live in it. Since I was a child, I’d always been drawn to the misunderstood, the unheard, and the unseen. I could feel them in a way that others couldn’t. I’ve also been acutely aware of a certain kind of light that has followed me my whole life. I can’t tell you the exact moment it happened, but when those things met, it was clear to me that part of my purpose here is to use my hyperawareness to bring more empathy to world and expand our social consciousness through my unique lens.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work in front of and behind the scenes. I write, produce, conceptualize, and act. What sets me apart from others is that I can see the vision in it’s entirety and approach the work from all sides. I empathize with the needs of everyone involved and create an environment that allows us all to thrive. Nothing about this journey is easy. I’m still figuring it out, but I’ve gotten to a place where I am really enjoying the journey. The hardest part about this process is not the work itself, but actually getting the opportunity to create and get it out there. There have been times where I have put hours, days, and months into projects that never saw the light of day. That doesn’t discourage me though, because every time I create, I learn a new skill or a lesson to apply to my next endeavor. I believe that everything up until this point has been preparation for a huge breakthrough. I don’t take any of it for granted. I put my heart and soul into my craft. I approach my character work through an immensely personal lens as I believe that there are pieces in all of us that can be found in someone else. If I can inspire others to see that too, I’ve done my job.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t spend a lot of time hanging out, but my go to place to let go is MJQ concourse. It’s a place where all kinds of people can come groove and release their stresses. I actually find a lot of inspiration for my work there. I don’t know of another place in Atlanta where so many different people can coexist in one place on a similar vibration. It’s a small gem that, in a way, represents what I hope to accomplish in my work.
I also loveee the diners here in Atlanta. Thumbs up, Flying Biscuit, First Watch, and Atlanta Breakfast club all have an authentic no frills vibe. It’s nostalgic. Like being in an old movie.
Landmark Midtown Art Cinema and Starlight Drive in are also really cool places to get a unique movie theatre experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this Shoutout to my mother, Rhonda. Her unwavering faith in me has always given me the courage to walk such an uncertain path. She believed I could when no one else did, even when I doubted myself. She’s the only person who saw the vision before I did. Because of her, I’ve survived every trial and overcame every obstacle. Because of her, I’ll see it through.
