We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenneice Wilson-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenneice, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I can do this… I remember when the publication I was working for at the time decided to close and go out of business. At the time the professional beauty industry only had that one publication for a true multicultural source of information. So the fact they were closing was alarming. I remember thinking what are the professionals in the industry going to do? Mainly the African-American community. The other publications in the industry had multicultural sections, not a cover to cover form of multicultural Information. Having a conversation with a stylist team one day at a photoshoot about the closing of that magazine lead me to thinking, I can do this. So, literally 18 months later after a lot of research, planning and long nights putting my ideas on paper. I launched The Beauty Consultant Magazine in the fall of 2011.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
TBC Media Group, LLC., currently publishes The Beauty Consultant Magazine (TBC) and will be launching a new publication The Colored Life (TCL) in 2021. Both of these publications capture a niche market, TBC is the only true multicultural beauty publication in the US and The Colored Life will be the first national multicultural LGBTQ+ Magazine. Due to the current climate we had to sort of reintroduce ourselves so we have launched a new side of our business where we have added marketing, pr, sales, consulting, advertising and branding for small business and nonprofits. We will be introducing in the coming months our publishing expertise to small businesses and nonprofits, where we will create, design and publish newsletters, magazine, advertisements and articles. This will be a way for the business to reach their current clients and to generate new business. This has not been an easy journey and I don’t believe I have enough space to go on about why it’s been so difficult. However, I will say I have learned to beat the odds and the challenges presented to me. I have learned to listen and trust my team. I am most proud that my company is a woman owned and operated company. I have an awesome team of women who work hard and have a passion for what they do. I love to work with young interns either still in college or fresh out, to give them a platform to learn and thrive in. I would like the world to know that entrepreneurship is hard but rewarding. I have worked many years in corporate and made a lot of money but found myself not happy. I am truly happy working in my passion and doing would I love and actual believe I am good at.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh goodness where to start? Atlanta has some many places. I would defiantly start with the mall of course I am more of a Phipps girl, then dinner at Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Next day the Georgia Aquarium and Atlantic Station for a bite to eat and drinks. We would check out a basketball game (if in season) and I would love a road trip to Savannah for a couple of days. Maybe eat some seafood, site seeing then to Tybee Island.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh yeah! I have three very important stylist, educators and innovators in the professional beauty industry that without these wonderful individuals I would not be where I am today, nor would this publication even exist. Tory Hoover of Salon Tu Cozy and Ella K Della – Tory is a national educator, stylist and owner of her natural hair product line, Ella K Della. I have had many a long conversations with Tory on the direction of The Beauty Consultant Magazine (TBC) and she has been a contributing writer for the publication from the start. Derrick (BabyBoy) Smart – Derrick is a phenomenal hair stylist, he has published his work in countless magazines, dominated the stage in competitions including our annual hair battle where he completely stole the show. He is better known for his platform work at varies hair shows including the famous Bronner Bros. Joseph (MikeMike) Smart – Mike is a celebrity stylist, make up artist and educator, both MikeMike and BabyBoy are credited for giving me the idea to launch The Beauty Consultant Magazine. Mike has graced the stage as a competitor, platform artist and educator. He will also be found behind the scenes of photoshoots and movies sets.
