We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelvena Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelvena, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important thing I’ve done as a parent in terms of the impact on my children is showing them the importance of following their dreams. When I was growing up, I had a pretty traditional childhood where the plan was to go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a good job. This wasn’t at all the wrong way; it just wasn’t a way that worked for me when I became a parent. My Dad supported my creativity by providing me the tools and resources to help me thrive and I think he knew early on I was different. His support allowed me to be comfortable being myself and going after what I wanted, and that is what I instill in my own children. Supporting and igniting their creativity by providing them with what they need to thrive is the ultimate impact. Not only do they see me and their Dad following our dreams, but we support theirs which helps give them hope that they will become reality. Both of my children have their own paths, as parents we are present for their endeavors, we support them monetarily, and we make the necessary sacrifices to show them we are behind them in whatever it is they decide to do. Education is important, and a big deal in our household, but so is entrepreneurship, so is creativity and sports, so is technology, and forward thinking. We give our children the space to choose their own paths, and we support them along their journey in every way we can!

What should our readers know about your business?

While building and providing solutions to your problems, I connect you with experts, resources, and tools to further contribute to the success of your brand. What sets me apart is your experience, which is personable, professional, and creative throughout your brand building stage and beyond.

The journey leading up to my new brand is a very creative one. I started my entrepreneurial journey in the beauty industry March 2014. I guess March is blooming month for me lol. My mentor at the time helped me start my beauty brand, connecting me with distributors and providing guidance on how to get started. At the time I was still in college working on my bachelor’s degree in Business Management, which solidified my passion for entrepreneurship. Being in the entrepreneurial space gave me the opportunity to find my passion through connections, people, and the impact I made on my community which was ultimately the confidence to chase my dreams. As the years passed by, I constantly found myself more drawn to the branding, marketing, events, and relationship-building aspect of it all. I started to be the person others came to in need of help getting started with their business, and I helped in any way I could which is what led me to branding.

Working in the tech industry also contributed to my love for digital design and how I could apply my creativity to create content, build websites, and strategize ways to grow brands using social media and digital platforms. I transitioned to branding slowly but surely started to grow in that lane in 2019. I started as a freelancer offering digital services and expanded to a company where we offer digital and custom printed branding services. My son is an employee of KB Management and offers video editing and his expertise and guidance on my daughter’s YouTube channel as well as client assistance with Tik Tok, and more. We also hired a graphic designer who is amazing and taught me a great deal of branding skills as well. To date we are thriving and growing and plan to show the world all we have to offer.

Don’t get me wrong this road wasn’t easy. I endured a lot of challenges and bumps along the way. There was a lot of self-doubt especially when things didn’t go as planned. There were times I was overwhelmed with it all and didn’t think I could keep going. There were times I didn’t have the funds to support my business goals. The key is I never gave up. I overcame each challenge one at a time. Leaning on my village when I needed to also helped tremendously. Going at my own pace and not comparing my journey to others kept me grounded. Going to therapy and practicing self-care played a major role because ultimately, I was no good to anyone or anything if I wasn’t to myself. And prayer and faith, I am a Christian and depend heavily on my spiritual side to get me through rough times.

I want the chance to share my story with others like me who may face these challenges. In efforts to do so I wrote a book! A Creative Path by Kelvy B is a mentor styled guided workbook for creatives and entrepreneurs on how to trust the process and adapt to change while going through their creative journey. It was published January 2021, and to-date has sold over 200 copies. My goal is to use my platform and my book to impact as many lives as possible just like the mentors and my village did for me!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would have a ball!! Fun to me looks like shopping with the local and black owned businesses in the area. Trying new food spots and even food trucks in the area because those usually have the best food! Happy hours and brunch are a must! I’m still learning the city myself so it would be an adventure for both of us. I would def hit up my friend Sheena because she knows all the good spots!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my village!! I mention my village a lot because it truly takes one and I’m thankful to have the one I do. There are so many people who play a major role in my success, and I don’t take it for granted. My family and friends, always believing in me, pushing me to my fullest potential, and supporting all my endeavors no matter how crazy they may seem. My mentor Dr. Marquita Taylor, she instilled the confidence I needed to keep going when I was ready to throw in the towel. She helped me see the importance of growing with your brand and pivoting to where that growth leads you, without feeling like a failure. My children think I’m the coolest Mom ever, and that gives me more drive than they will ever know. Seeing their faces with smiles of admiration and proudness is what keeps me going. Most importantly my husband, since the day we met in high school he’s always loved and supported me in ways I didn’t think I was deserving of. He supports everything I do, picks up my slack when I’m busy, and gives me the space to show up as my best self rather that’s in my business, my job, my clients, my friends or family, and even at home because he balances me out!
