We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Dickinson Carsen Ramsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla Dickinson, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Carsen: I was coming to a point in my career where I wanted more control over my business and how I wanted to interact with my clients. When you’re behind the chair, you develop a relationship with them in a way that is essentially you running your own business, and I grew to a place where I wanted full control over that.
Kayla: From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to have my chair be a place for guests to feel comfortable and connected, so I made space and time for my guests with extensive consultations and well-paces appointments that didn’t leave them feeling rushed. In a fast paced salon environment, sometimes this way of operating your business doesn’t fit well, and I was running into this issue, so I decided it was time to make this move!
What should our readers know about your business?
Starting our own salon has been the most rewarding sort of challenging! We’ve learned so much about the kind of owners and employers we want to be, and decided very early on that we wanted to grow a place that both employees and guests can feel welcomed and supported in. We truly feel that when you focus on the success and happiness of your employees, the guests feel that. Success will come with the joy you bring to people!
Of course, making such a major change comes with risk, which drives us to work very hard to achieve our goals! Some days it can be very easy to let work overtake our time and follow us home, so we have learned to be very intentional with pursuing a good work-life balance. This includes taking time off around the holidays, taking vacations, and taking mental health days when we need them!
We are so proud that we have successfully focused on these goals that we started out with!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Kayla: I’m an artsy sort of person, so I’d probably take my friend to some art museums, especially the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art. A day strolling around the Marietta Square would be fun, and then maybe see a play at the Fox Theatre! Dinner would be Agora midtown with some of their amazing cocktails and appetizers!
Carsen: I’d take my friend to hang out around the Battery, with breakfast at Cultivate and a Braves game in the afternoon. We’d finish the evening with live music and drinks at Park Bench!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We drew a lot of inspiration and confidence from our mentors who made similar moves to us in opening their own salons! There has been an attitude of building each other up and achieving success together that has been really beautiful to be a part of!
