We had the good fortune of connecting with Katya Matute and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katya, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
As an immigrant born and raised in Nicaragua; the most difficult decision was leaving my country Nicaragua at the age of 16. Leaving my mother, my family and my culture which was everything I knew. My dad gave me the life changing opportunity to move to Atlanta, Georgia and go to school here and pursue the American dream, and here I am years later still pushing through.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Moonchild Picnic Rentals out of my love for decorating. My family and friends would tell me “oh you should do it for a living” and I thought it was a crazy idea since I had no clue on where to start or if I should start a business. It can be scary and intimidating when something is so unknown. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to give it a shot, even if it meant starting small and slow. After all, life is about taking chances! Looking back I am so proud of myself for taking the risk, most people don’t even get to the starting line because of fear. Has it been easy? Not at all! I have made mistakes but I’ve learned from them and gotten better each time. I have had many sleepless nights with my mind going in circles thinking of new ideas and things I could improve. Sometimes it feels impossible to shut away those thoughts – but that’s ok, it’s part of the process. The main message I would like to share is that it is okay to be scared, it’s okay to make mistakes, it’s okay to be tired and want to give up. But you can’t let fear define you. You have to keep pushing through, take the chance and never, ever give up. I want people to know this is just the beginning for Moonchild Picnic Rentals, this is my beginning!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To kick off our week, I would welcome them to our house by preparing a home cooked meal. My husband and I love to cook and to entertain. We take pride in the dishes we make and are always looking for new recipes to try out. We’d follow dinner with some fun cocktails or a nice bottle of wine and of course lots of conversation and catching up. Then, I would like to take them out hiking perhaps Cloudland Canyon or Amicalola Falls. Our area has lots of beautiful outdoor spaces and if the weather is nice I would definitely take advantage of being outside! If its summertime, we could also go paddle boarding and catch the sun on Lake Lanier. For a little city action, I would take them to Piedmont park area for some delicious food and end the night at a rooftop bar for city views.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would really like to thank my husband for all of his effort in helping and supporting every crazy idea of mine. My family and friends for being my cheerleaders and mentors and providing me with knowledgeable advice and encouragement. Lastly, I would like to thank all of my customers for believing and trusting me to bring their vision to life, big or small.
