We had the good fortune of connecting with Kasheena Griner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kasheena, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a single parent raising a black son, one thing I wanted to ensure to do was raise an emotionally intelligent human being. I wanted to ensure my son had the emotional tools to be a whole person that knew what it felt to express himself with any given emotion. Growing up in the south, I found that silencing children and not giving them a voice was just the thing to do. “Shut up and be quiet.” Nobody asked you how you felt or gave children the voice to share their feelings.  I wanted to do just the opposite. I wanted to give my son the opportunity to express how he feels and give him the space to sort through those feelings without shutting him down. I wanted to parent different.

What should our readers know about your business?

I started my business, Integrated Concepts & Consulting, LLC in 2017 with a vision in mind but the vision changed as life moved me in various directions and pushed me off my original path. Over the years, other things have taken more priority and other opportunities landed in my lap. I am excited to finally be back on track with my original vision for my business with my own experience in mind. Integrated Concepts & Consulting, LLC is a consultation firm that offers primary care physicians and pediatricians a different way to do their practice. As a licensed therapist, I started doing therapy in an integrated setting where the whole person is considered. Where a “simple” visit to the doctor about lack of sleep doesn’t just result in a sleep aid. Perhaps, the lack of sleep is deeper than just needing a pill to allow your body to rest. It could be much more than that. Or even parents going to the pediatrician to say, my child is having behavioral problems and needs to sit still in class doesn’t resort to giving a child medication without other interventions and skills being taught.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way allows me to lead with passion and everything else follows. My child was diagnosed with ADHD in the 5th grade. Thankfully, I was able to explore interventions and help teach emotional regulation to avoid medication. This isn’t everyone else’s story. But that doesn’t mean, medication has to be the first resort. So I am putting my experience in my business.

In addition to consultation, I am creating a product that allows parents and others to help give children and even themselves ways to effectively express their emotions and work on building their emotional intelligence.  Follow my business for updates as the product becomes available for purchase in the next few months.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta has some amazing restaurants with the best food. I would find a really nice rooftop vibe with live music and good food. We’re dressing up and heading there for the good vibe and eats. The actual name could change because with Atlanta, restaurants are always opening and closing everyday. During the week, we’re going shopping for sure. Depending on their taste and what they’re into, I’d determine where we would go. Because let’s be honest, if you know where to go, we can run through a few thrift stores and consignment shops and rack up. Plus, you’re almost guaranteed to not look like anyone else. We are also hanging out every evening under my pergola with more good food and drinks. I love entertaining so I’m laying it out for my friend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my amazing sister circle. We push each other in ways that challenge me and take me to the next level. They have even seen me in spaces I didn’t see myself. I want to shout them out for the gentle nudge or sometimes the shove in the back. And for this, I appreciate them for the fuel to be better and do better.  Surrounding myself with these women has enhanced both my personal and professional life in so many ways.
