We had the good fortune of connecting with Karin Husty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“Risks” are a major part of being an Artist. Working Artist take risks in their everyday studio work and especially when it come to the business aspect of Art. Risks in your studio practice are essential for moving forward in your work and ensures you stay relevant and unique. To depend on a solid income, an Artist must take risks in the galleries and representatives’ who show and sell your work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Artist Statement
It is the intuitive, mysterious, and meditative process of creating that motivates me to come into the studio every day. “For the sake of painting” is reason enough for me to start exploring my art tools. I love to paint!

The method of spreading oil and wax over a substrate with a buttery texture, like icing a cake, excites my senses and gives the blank canvas a starting point to evolve. Sketching with charcoal, pastels, and graphite during the under layers evoke interesting shapes. Scraping back into the layers provides me opportunities to reveal the paintings’ history of surprising colors and gestural lines peeking through, which gives me clues on where the piece wants to take me.

My abstract land and waterscapes emerge with recognizable elements of the earth, water, and sky, gleaned from my North Georgia residence and travels. I am always challenging myself to capture the expansive atmosphere, translucent waters, and textural buildings and bridges in an abstract way that allows the viewer to spark a memory or familiarity of their own.

Still life painting has always intrigued me, whether the subject is a chair, vase, or apple, my goal is to treasure ordinary objects in unique montages and unexpected compositions, giving the everyday snapshots of life.

My non-objective work is built by expressive lines with organic and geometric shapes. The inside and the outside world around me is a constant source of inspiration and my imagination takes over to express my artistic voice that is constantly evolving.

Currently, I am wrapping up a body of work inspired by the “Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah GA”…since my first visit 3 years ago. Wandering the stunning cemeteries’ artifacts and discovering the amazing history and stories within this magical place became my goal to depict Bonaventure through my eyes. I will be researching the perfect venue to unveil this work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is bursting with life! The beauty of our landscape provides everything from hiking the north Georgia mountains, floating and paddling the Chattahoochee River and Fishing and boating on Lake Lanier. Atlanta has also become a hub for excellent eateries with renown chefs setting up new restaurants. I live in Alpharetta, Georgia and our small town vibe is full to the brim of parks, places to enjoy music and great food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without the encouragement and support of my family, friends, and peers, I would be at this stage in my art career today. The unwavering commitment from my husband, Rick, of 32 years and my family who always supported my efforts has been fundamental in my success.
