We had the good fortune of connecting with Kanessa Miller Doss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kanessa Miller, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

I am absolutely in love with inspirational and motivational quotes, so this is an extremely challenging question. In my office, I have a quote wall to infuse my heart with inspiration on tough days and to keep me going on good days. My wall is an inspirational masterpiece with quotes, poems, scriptures, declarations, and prayers.
It is nearly impossible to narrow my list of favorite quotes to just one. Today, I want to share one of my top three favorite quotes; the scripture quote from Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Words can’t describe what this scripture quote means to my faith, family, and career journeys. I know that my God is with me even when my present situation seems bleak. I appreciate knowing that God is with me through the good, the bad, and the in-between. My hope is in my faith that God will give me the strength to withstand all things to secure my abundant future and live my purposeful life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like many other women, I am a blessed juggler striving to balance my faith journey, nurture my marriage and family, and succeed in my career as a tenured professor while writing and managing a small business. I am continuously juggling between being Wifey, Mommy, servant leader, Dr. Doss, writer, and simply Kanessa. Last summer, I created a virtual community- Faith, Family & Career. I founded this community for women to connect, share tips for thriving not just surviving the juggling act, and encourage other blessed jugglers. I am not a blogger, but I think of myself as a virtual community engagement facilitator building a positive and loving community for women to connect via the website and private Facebook group.

I appreciate how the Faith, Family, & Career community and brand allowed me to reconnect with my childhood love for creative writing and socializing. After years of writing lectures, presentations, grants, and journal articles for academic publications about my research, I am extremely happy to explore my ability to paint pictures using words. It’s even more meaningful because I am sharing my experiences and juggling secrets while encouraging faith/work/life balance, supporting other women, and establishing a circle for women to connect.

This new adventure is not quite as easy as I hoped, however, I am loving every moment. I am truly having a blast discovering new skills I didn’t think I possessed. Although it was not ideal to add one more job in competition with my extremely demanding career and family life, I am managing to balance all my roles by prioritizing and maximizing my time management skills.

Faith, Family, & Career expanded from just a virtual community to a small business last August. The online store features apparel, drinkware, and two books. Prayers & Possibilities and Prayers & Possibilities in Color are the first two installments of a prayer journal series. Both books are 30-day guided prayer journals for women to spark their connection with God; and uplift their faith, family, and career in prayer. Although both journals feature creative ways to connect with God, the second volume is a coloring prayer journal for those who would appreciate creative expression and prayer through coloring.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Auburn, AL so a visit to Atlanta is one of my favorite treats. I love to start with visiting family and friends. We usually just hang out or go to some of my favorite places to shop like Trader Joe’s or most stores in Atlantic Station. I love plays, ballet, and most art performances so my absolute favorite place to go is the Fox Theatre. Then, I would dine at one of the amazing restaurants that Atlanta has to offer.

Additional outings often depend on whether I’m traveling with my family, the Girls, or work colleagues. If I’m with my family we usually MUST visit Dave & Busters, Six Flags Over Georgia, or White Water. We also usually visit educational sites like the Georgia Aquarium. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, or The King Center. If I’m with my Girls, we love to relax at Chateau Elan’s amazing spa. The experience is like no other. My colleagues and I usually find a fun place to enjoy within walking distance to our hotel. I love that Atlanta has so much to offer and no visit has to be the same as the last.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to praise and thank God! My relationship with God is my most fulfilling and meaningful connection. Plus, I appreciate the plan that God has for my life. My faith has directed me through some extremely difficult situations and continues to guide me through the unpredictable surprises of life. Second, I must give a shout-out to my husband Willie; and our four amazing children: Kaiden, Akayla, Ashton, and Kaitlyn. I love being your wife and Mommy. Last but not least, I want to acknowledge my wonderful family, friends, and Facebook group- Faith, Family, & Career. I appreciate your support, encouragement, wisdom, and so much more. I love you all!
