We had the good fortune of connecting with Junyi Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Junyi, what matters most to you?
The value that matters most to me is authenticity. It is the foundation for both personal and artistic growth. In a world filled with external influences and pressures, it’s very challenging to stay true to ourselves and create authentic works. But I believe embracing authenticity leads to a more meaningful and fulfilling creative journey. It allows us dive into our deepest thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It gives us the freedom to experiment and take creative risks. When we stay genuine, we also draw in an audience that truly appreciate and connect with our work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I mainly focus on oil painting and performance art. I want to discuss topics that are important to myself, and create art that’s meaningful to myself. As a result, my works have strong personal elements. But I also want to ensure my audience doesn’t need any extra skills or knowledge to appreciate them. I aim to create works that possess beauty, tension, and depth all at once.

I really look forward to the large-scale oil paintings and experimental performances I’m planning to do. I learn so much from each project I’ve done.

Professional growth takes time. I spent a lot of time in trial and error, self-doubt, and gradually found my own path. I would say the ultimate way to overcome challenges is to maintain a positive mindset. When reality doesn’t meet expectations, that frustration can be pretty intense. Keeping a balanced mindset allows me to embrace a better future.

I want people to know that I am a living and breathing, imperfect but sincere individual. I’m not always filled with positivity, but I believe the universe will bring me to happiness. I hope my art can touch the lives of others, providing them with aesthetic enjoyment, comfort, or inspire them to contemplate deeper aspects of life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will take my best friend to as many musicals, operas, dance performances, and plays as possible. This is one of the best parts of New York City: it gathers the best artists from all over the world. And of course, the excellent art museums like the MET, Whitney, and MoMA. In between enjoying all these, I will take her to some great Asian restaurants and dessert places. Enjoying cute desserts is one of life’s greatest pleasures!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout to 33 Contemporary, the gallery that represents me. Didi and Sergio acknowledged my abilities, saw my potential, and went the extra mile to support me. The achievements I have now wouldn’t be possible without their help. I’m really grateful to have these people who brought warmth and encouragement into my life, keeping me hopeful during the most difficult times.
