Meet Jowan “wan” Lewis-kearse | Fashion Designer, Personal Trainer, Model, Recording Artist, Gardener, Amateur Herbalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jowan “wan” Lewis-kearse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jowan “Wan”, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk taking is important in life. Risk to me is like exercise in a way because it can get you out your comfort zone, build you up, and teach you a lot about yourself. I enjoy taking risks, usually calculated, in order to create new limits and experience things I hadn’t before. Taking risks has helped me to do just about everything I’ve done and even the times that I took a risk and failed I was still able to learn, reevaluate, and proceed accordingly. .

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up playing football from 6yrs old all the way through college, but I’ve always been creating stuff since I was a kid. I would try to invent new things and just do stuff that others weren’t. I’ve had a couple gardens growing up before my current one but I got more in-depth with it as I got older and had my own space. I used to be a sneaker head growing up, which led to me getting into fashion. I started doing custom clothing because I wanted to be able to wear garments that no one else had access to. I also like that I can add my own emotions to the pieces. Rather than shopping in stores for pieces that gave me a certain feeling I could create it. I started making music when I was 19 but took it more serious when I got my studio built in 2019. I like making music because it allows me to express myself and have fun in a unique way that nothing else offers. I like to incorporate everything I like doing into everything that I do. For example: I like making clothing with plant prints or plant inspired in general. Sometimes I add gardening or fitness verbiage into my songs as well. It’s not always easy to be creative, but most of the time that I can’t be creative in one avenue, I can be in another and then use it as inspiration for another. I’ve learned that I’m more creative when I’m bored or not actively trying to be. I would like the world to know that I’m the only Wan.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were to visit I’d bring them to some of my favorite places to hang out and eat at. I’ll bring them to lowkey food spots tucked away and also to the popular places everyone talk about. Some of the hang out spots would include places like The Underground, the Beltline, Ponce City Market and other locations scattered across Metro Atlanta. I’m not much of a drinker but if they insisted I’d bring them to the local bar for a good drink and some great wings. Some of the most exciting people to meet to me would most likely be other creatives like me. They come with their own set of knowledge based off their experience that can be helpful to me. A place that is interesting is a Art/Fashion Show, you meet some of the most interesting people at those events.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my family who has always supported and had faith in me. I want to shout out my team and closest friends who push me to be better. I want to shout out everyone who has supported and helped me along my journey.
